Ok, so I'm setting up to record an acoustic trio.

Mics available:
1x Samson CO3 large diapraghm condensor (3 shapes: cardiod, 8 or O)
2 x matched Samson CO2 pencil cardiod condensors

DAW:
I have 3 inputs available on my Maya44 (one may be faulty - long story)
and am using the preamps on my desk.

Instruments:
Acoustic Upright Bass
Nylon String Acoustic Guitar
A style Archtop mandolin

The Bass has a Fishman bridge pickup and preamp.

Any ideas as to which instruments to match with which mic?

BTW: I'm going for a jazzy acoustic sound.

Oh and I forgot to mention that we'll be recording live without acoustic seperation - we'll be in the same space that is.

No vocals?

Might try them facing in in a circle.
If you're thinking of getting the pickup in there you'll want a way to mix the two but there's a decent chance the best mic position will be out of phase with the p/u.

No vocals.

Will probably try the circle idea, and facing towards my pc (in the same room), so that the mics are facing away from my pc's noisy fan.

GOTTEN HIMMEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

is there no way at all you can get away from the PC fan???

because your LDC in particular is gonna eat that noise for dinner

if you can, why not move them into a bigger quiter room... use the matched pair as a stereo set, and the LDC as the main mic... move them around until it sounds right...
if those mics dont pick up enough bass... plug in the pickup

i'd try fig-8 and omni... see which one sounds better for your room...

i'd ditch two of the Mikes and take her out to dinner.

that was bad. like ac/dc meets hee haw.

Yeah Slidey, I know the room is noisy. Will see what I can do.

This recording is really just a test of sorts - these mics are brand new so I'm using the opportunity to try them out and looking for ideas as to where to start.

Trying to be creative in this process without worrying too much about noise issues etc.

But thinking about noise - and room sound - what I might do is move the mics into the next room, actually the foyer of the factory floor that I'm based in and see what the room sounds like - will just have to see if anyone else will be working late :)

seismetr0n: I've thinking on these lines (stereo pair etc.) - there'll be so much leak anyhow, that it makes sense to work with this. I come from a classical/folk background, so like the one take live recording.

thanks for the ideas!
