Hey Everyone, I need some help guys with mic choices.

I have a Tascam 424 MkII, 4 track cassette recorder-- I just got it, and I'm using it mostly to record rhythm tracks for rehearsal, and practice stuff-- nothing extensive.

I would like to mic the drums using 3 mics, (2) overhead condensers, and one mic in the bass drum. . .

But, I really don't want to spend a lot of money on mics, especially since its mostly for practice stuff, and rehearsals. But, I would like something adequate sounding-- not just garbage, . .well, maybe garbage if it has a descent sound . .

Can you guys recommend some cheaper condenser mic, that will do the trick using this type of setup.

Nay help would be appreciated. Thanks, Ray

Some mics that I have seen for a descent price are the SAMSON C05, and the BEHRINGER B-5, and even the AKG C1000s.

Im not really an expert.. but if i was you I'd use a nice kick mic in the bassdrum (AKG dymanic?) and then have one mic on (not touching the head) the snare (Shure SM57?) and then one overhead. I think you need phantom powering for condensers (???) which i doubt the 424 will have....

I wouldn't bother with stereo miking drums on a four track.

Here's what I'd do

1 Audio-Technica ATM25 (about $140 new $100 on ebay) on the kick

1 Shure SM57 (around $80 new, $67 on ebay) on the snare

1 Studio Projects B3 ($170) in omni mode as overhead.

Of course, you'll need a Phantom Power source for the B3. But you should be able to get one of those cheap enough (you may already have an appropriately equipped stand-alone mic pre or channel strip).

FWIW, I run an AKG D112 on kic and two Shure KSM 109's as OH's. If you run your left (from drummers view) above the center of snare, the length of 2 drumsticks held end to end, angled at the snare...and your right OH over drummers right shoulder, also the length of 2 sticks end to end, from center of snare and angled to middle of toms...you should get a pretty decent sound. The 109's DO need phantom, tho. I also use a 57 on snare but have found I get a pretty decent sound just outta the 3. Hope it helps...........Peace

i was in your situation a few weeks ago. I bought a 57 for my snare and an atm25 for the bass....got a couple of condensers (the mxl603s stereo pack goes for around $200...some people say it makes the cymbals sound too bright, but their perfect for me). I just wanted a semidecent sound, but i wound up with a very professional sounding kit.
