3,4, 5, 6 or 7 Pin XLR? Confused...

I'm new to XLR cables, my mic strangely came with a 1/4" despite my friends model coming with an XLR... now I have to swap cable type. I know my mic needs a female 3 pin XLR... but what is the difference in the pin numbers for the other end? Is there a standard for microphones and recording?

Just get a standard three pin XLR cable. Those with more than three pins are for uncommon uses, like 5 pin for balanced stereo on one cable.

Wire it like this if the existing 1/4" is a TRS with two conductors + shield (Ground):

Pin 1 - Ground - Sleeve
Pin 2 - Hot - Tip
Pin 3 - Cold - Ring

If only a 1/4" TS with one conductor + shield (Ground):

Pin1 - Ground - Sleeve
Pin2 - Hot - Tip
Pin3 - Cold - ---------
Sometimes wiring both Pin1 and Pin3 to Ground give less noise...but try without first.
