2mono vs 1stereo pre

seems i've read about the possible Phase issues (?) in buying 2 of the same preamps as opposed to just one in stereo.(i.e. ME-2NV vs 2 ME-1NV.) well....id sure like to get the 1NV now and get another one later cause im impatient. Probably take me awhile to save the extra $$. What are the disadvantages sonic-ly of having 2 exact mono pres? Thinking of using them for stereo overheads, etc...

Where did you read that?

A "stereo" preamp is basically two mono preamps in one box. If you look at the info on the Great Preamps you mention, you'll see that the one channel is identical to the two channel, except that it is just one channel. Perhaps the power supply is different, but the rest is going to be the same or pretty darn close.

If you take the Grace 1010 versus the 201, there are more differences between them.

However, I don't know why two single channel preamps from the same manufacturer would cause phase problems not found in a similar two channel unit. Could be wrong, but I think you got some bad info.
 
Im pretty sure i read it here somewhere......but it would seem like ultra-anal matching stuff. What I thought I read was something to do with the AC power phase differential (am i on lsd?>)....like you would get some sort of possible phase anomolies due to 2 separate power supplies. Thats rrrrrrrrrrrreal good if I am wrong here cuz im gonna go ahead and buy the Stinkin ME-1NV (and buy another later)
 
All of the GR stuff will match.



If you were to pair up two vintage pieces, they may or may not, due largely to component changes during the length of the production run.

Small changes, like interchanging a 10uF/25volt cap for a 15uF/35volter isn't likely to affect anything, but changing a transformer vendor probably will.

Not something to really stress over tho...
 
great news....i guess the only thing ill have to do is buy a rack mounter thinger when i get the 2nd one. I was going to go for the Toft ATC-2 , but i said screw it....ill prob be happier with the GR in the long haul.
