can anyone answer me this? the 2488 has 12 single tracks and what looks like 12 stereo tracks. are the stereo tracks capable of being separated to actually utilize all 24 tracks, or is it strictly 12 single tracks and 12 stereo tracks?

No they'll work just like they do on a 788, which is 6 single tracks and 2 stereo.

sorry to be ignorant, but that answer confuses me. so, does that mean on the 2488 it WILL be 12 single tracks and 12 stereo tracks?

I'll try again. From the looks of it, faders 1 through 12 are single tracks. Some may be linked like 5 and 6 are on a 788 but can be separated. The next 6 faders (13-18) appear to be stereo tracks and the only thing you can do with them individually once something is recorded on them is pan. Volume, eq, effects, etc, are common to both tracks.

Personally I would use it as an 18 track machine and not think about maximizing it to 24 but by bouncing you could achive full use. Lets say you recorded drums, bass, and rhythm guitar at once using four mics on the drums (snare, kick, 2 overheads). You could mix the four tracks down to stereo or separate the 2 overheads for instance and put them on 13/14 and free up the individual tracks for another use. Same for harmony vocals and the like.

thanks phil. i got ya. technically you can get an awesome full sound on this thing by bouncing down to the stereo tracks alot. looking forward to its delivery into my hands. jumping up form a 12 to this. anyone play around with the 2488 yet?
