do i need a pre amp when recording vocals on this or does it have effects and such already on it?

Yo Aaron:The 2488 has "effects" built-in; however, you can use outboard effects if you choose.
A decent mic-pre would help you especially with vocals. Many models and prices to choose from--see any issue of TapeOp [free zine] as they carry many ads for mic-pres.
I use a Grace 101 for vocals and an ART dual channel for my drum machine and synth. Today's synths have such good patches that often you do not have to add any reverb and you can change effects of any patch.
I use the Yam 2816 but I'm sure it operates in a similar fashion as the Tascam 2488.
Anyway, the price on the Tascam unit looks pretty good. How good is the 2488? I'm sure you can find out on the Tascam forum.
