Searched briefly on compression in all forums and got a few tips. but mostly it was 'yeah, use compression'

I know almost nothing about this when you go into mic effects and choose recording (on my brand new 2488 that almost gives me a chubby everytime I look at it) I select compressor and it defaults to -40db and other settings. I've read up on compressors and I know what they do, but I don't really know what settings are best with vocals. Experimentation I guess will be next.

do I remember right from my readings that compressors boost low vocals as well as stopping dangerous peaks?

What levels do most people use? Also if anyone uses the 2488 I think I might be missing something on some of the settings. Do you have to turn on the effect and then go to send and set that as well?

The manual isn't very clear (although I did read it quickly)

I use outboard compression and preamps mostly, plus it allows me to use the onboard desser, but you can get good recordings from the onboard compressor. One thing, Tascam's method of adjusting ratio is on a 0-100 scale and thus different from the norm. Go to the Tascam forum and read up on it, I think Pat from Tascam explains it somewhere.

Tascam forum doesn't seem to exist - I saw an old link to it, but it was broken.

unless you have a current url
