I'm building a new D.A.W with CUBASE SX, I already have the 2408MKII in a existing system, but I was wondering about the HAMMERFALL 96/52.

How is it ?

(the only advantage to the 2408 is 24 input adat opt)
(the HAMMERFALL I think is 8 in 16 out)

The Hammerfall 96/52 is a full 24-channel Lightpipe I/O....

The Hammerfall 96/32 is full 16-channel Lightpipe I/O.........

Both have ADAT sync..........

I use the 96/32 and it's excellent!

I didnt see that on the site, it's a full 24 channel I/O
(let me go back and read again)?

So would you say it's better than the MOTU 2408MKII ?

(thinking) it would save a 19"space, no audio wire, it would be DIRECT from computer to MIXER, and does the exact same thing as the 2408, ASIO & everything.

The 96/36 has 2 pairs of Lightpipe connectors, plus S/PDIF...

The 96/52 has 3 pairs of Lightpipe connectors, plus S/PDIF, plus word clock...

All this and more straight off the website! ;)

Define "better"... I know Track Rat uses the MOTU and likes it.... I've never used MOTU so I can't say.........

How would you define "better" anyways??? They both pass Lightpipe I/O, they both sync.... they both do it well!

They both can be clocked externally. The MOTU has the 8 analog gozintas/gozotas and S/PDIF. I don't know if the Hammerfall is equilly equiped or if that would be a requirement for you. I don't know if either one does the same job "better" than the other as far as transfering ADAT lightpipe data.

to me the Hammerfall seemed to be more space effecient (no rack space to use). I only asked if it was better cause I heard so much about it but never really knew anyone who had it, so I decided to ask.

I guess I should keep my money in my pocket and stop trying to burn a unnecessary hole. Forgive me guys, I'm just trying to make the best DAW I can. to let you know

The hammerfall is awesome, but it does not have any analog connections. So, it will not save rackspace if you need the analog io.

BTW... you'll like Cubase SX when you get it... blows away 5.1, in my opinion!

I haven't used the hammerfall, but I love the 2408. I like it because

1) if I ever switch to mac, I can with no problems.
2) 8 Analog inputs that sound good
3) explandable system (by Christmas I will probably have 48 inputs just from buying another rack unit and using the same pci card)
4) Format conversion. You can convert formats from lightpipe to tdif, spdif analog in any of those combinations...and you don't need a computer to do it, but of course you can.
5) Rack mounted: I see that as a good thing in my case, I can plug everything in and leave it setup and not take up desk space.
6) Expandable in other ways, I could just buy a 24i to add 24 analog inputs, or buy the rack unit with all sorts of digital I/O and whatnot.
7) Any software. I can use any software with the exception of PT LE, but that doesn't bother me too much.

Downside:
1) NO midi. YOu must buy something else to use midi.
2) Not actually firewire, uses 'audio wire', basically, must use the MOTU card in teh computer.

Outside of that , it rocks.

Blue Bear -- I know I'm gonna love SX, I've been hearing a lot about it and how great it is.

Mastahnke -- thanks for pointing out those views, it made me see things a little clearer and in prospective, --STAY WITH MOTU--
(NO USB got me too, I was like damn this says AUDIO WIRE, USB is not the same thing) OH WELL (smile)

(I never thought I would get this bad at craving for new gear, it's like I've lost my humane function and I'm totally a fleshy CPU looking for HARDWARE to attach too) that may have been a little to deep for you guys but, sometimes it feels like that.
That's why it's good to ask questions, it helps in decision making.
