first guitar played was an alvarez

when I started playing I used my dad's old alvarez from the 70's. The action on that thing was so high that you had to really hold down the strings, but as a first guitar I never knew there could be lower action, or even what action was. :-P. The high action actually got me my callouses very quickly, and the tone on that thing was very unique. I still play and restring it when I go home to visit the folks for Christmas every year.

I don't want to bash Alvarez....but the name on the guitars now ("Alvarez") means something very different than it used to. I have h

I wanted an Alvarez for the longest time, but then tried a ton of them and they were very weak compared, say, with a Seagull, Norman, etc. in the same price range.

I have read many times that guitars in the series you're talking about have had many serious design flaws which result in neck joints going haywire long before they should. Also, lots of premature bellying up by the bridge. I almost bought one, now I'm glad I didn't. I don't mean to be the bringer of bad news. All I'm saying is that, if I were you, I'd return it and shop around. Read up on that series, they are problematic, as far as I've heard.
