Great track. Sounds just like the original as far as playing goes. I love hearing KISS covers.

I did think the guitars were a little thin. I dont know a whole lot about fixing them with eq but a boost at 250 sounds like a good idea to me :)
haha. thanks a lot. i like doing KISS covers. :)

okay, thanks everyone for the suggestions and compliments. i fiddled with it a little bit last night. tried to bring up some low-end and wet down the vocals a little more. please tell me what you think:

my original mix is still at the top if you want to compare.

It's only a 30 second clip. Where's the rest of the song?

Played a bunch of KISS in my teens but this one escapes me...not familiar with the Stones version either.....

- cool guitar tone
- thumpy bass drum in intro, drums nice throughout
- vocals sit nice in the center, super clear even when its get "going"
- harmonies good
- not getting any bass but that's probably my cheapo speakers
- sounds like Ace on solo, mellow, bend-y and slow groove
- sharp ending on the guitar
- overall (IMHO) the mix is a done deal - really sounds great

:) :D :) :D

What Ido said!!!!! Except for the cheapo speakers!!! :D

Bringing this one up, since I've been remiss lately... :o

Big drums man....guitar tone is very much as it should be for the era.... :D

Vocals aren't done badly at all.....pretty fun sounding...

This reminds me of a cool party tune...something I'd be drinking beer to. :D

Drums are cool...they have that over-the-top sound that fits...the guitars are spot on. They have a killer vibe to em.

Lead is a bit quiet, as it should also be over the top...just to fit....but hey, the tune is well done. Sounds like it's fun, and that means alot.

You seem to have fun with this, and it shows.

Most excellent man.....

thanks a lot dogman. :)

i do have lots of fun with this stuff. my old lady got me this recording stuff last christmas, and ive been glued to it ever since. i think she may regret it now. :p

anyway, thanks for the critique. i dont know which link you listened to, but ive got a newer version at the bottom of the first page.

thanks again. :)

This mix is much better overall EXCEPT the vox are a touch loud over the intruments. Other than that I think you're done!

But I'm wondering if I'm to blame for that. There's a misconception among some people here about what constitutes double-tracking. True double tracking is NOT simply duplicating an existing track. That only adds volume. True double-tracking means recording an entirely new pass and trying to match the original track as closely as possible. This add a natural chorus/flanging effect that cannot be achieved by having two instances of the same track up.

And that got me thinking further, so I dug out my copy of Dynasty and discovered that Ace didn't double-track the vocals. There are just lots of f/x on it.

Please don't take this bad, but this could pass for the kinks. If I didn't know better and I popped in my kinks greatest hits I don't think I would be the wiser.
Was this ever done by the kinks or was it written by Ray Davies?

It just sort of hit me there listening to the newer version. Sounds good!

yeah i have 2 vocal tracks, but its one take. i recorded 2 mono tracks at the same time just so i could pan them and alter the delay and reverb on each one individually. thanks for listening. :)

no, this is an old stones song off their 'satanic majesties' album. KISS re-did it in 79, and i tried to keep my version true to the KISS version. IMO, the original stones version sucks. to the best of my knowledge, the kinks never did this song. anyway, thanks for listening. :)

Well, it's not having the desired effect, IMO. I can barely hear any f/x on the vocal track.

Still, I think you did really well. Looking forward to future output.

I'm aware of the lineage. Just saying your version reminds me of the kinks a bit. It's not a bad thing. Would I own the greatest hit's if I thought it was bad?? Cost me $15.00 :D

I think the structure of the song lends it's self to a kink's like style too.

Anyway I like your version.
Keep it up!

thanks. working on another ace song right now. ;)

i tend to keep the effects pretty light. i thickened them up a touch, but im still way cleaner than the original KISS version. maybe its my voice or whatever, but i think i sound bad with too much vocal effects.

thanks a lot. i will! :)

I like your vocal sound. Very clear. What exactly is the signal chain for them? Mic to puter.

Is your room treated with any foam?
