I heard that good monitoring can be done on cheap bookshelf speakers because they provide no frequency response. Is this true?

"No frequency response'..........actually they provide a very norrow response. Perhaps something like 120hz-8khz.

Good Monitors such as the Mackie HR824's will go as low as 39hz and as high as 22.5khz (to bad none of us have an anechoic chamber:) ) These are great speakers that are at the top end of the homerecording spectrum.

Then you have the yamaha ns-10's which are something along the lines of 100hz-12.5khz (you'll begin to see a drop at 12.5hz on a chart) NS-10's have a +7db peak at 1.5khz. These are not exactly the best speakers to commit final mixes on. All though that is another topic all by itself.

And next up we have the......

Basically what I am getting at is check your mixes on all types of speakers. However, do not limit your mixes to twenty dollar speakers. The monitors are the most important part of the signal chain.......uhhh after the mic.......mic pre......wait, the cables, you gotta have the monster cable....and the UREI Limiter....etc lol

If you arent mixing a pro CD or serious demo, youll be ok...just remember to listen to some well produced commercial CD's to get an idea on how to mix on them...also, listen to your mixes on a few other systems to make sure it translates well......

monitoring on $20 speakers, i've seen it done... even with jenson speakers...but you may get a better mix out some good headphones(akg 240's)
i've done a good mix on ns-10's b4 along with bose monitors... couldn't tell the difference.
as Gargamel said, monitors like the mackies have much wider frequencys. i've played a track i did where the bass line drops to 24hz, the mackies picked it up, and bookshelf speaker won't, or they will distort like hell.
