You are right about the groups you mentioned.The pink floyds etc that used the Studio to create a new avenue to greatness and big bucks and they were able to pull it off live for the most part like you said....I dont have a problem with some artists not touring....if their music hits home with me I'll buy it....there's room for all sorts of avenues to success in the music biz and I wish the internet thing would become reality for people like sam....I guess my main beef is with this "star in a can" thing thats been happening for so long now,and the fact that major regional acts get snubbed by the majors...Im just hoping something happens in the music industry that will force them to give some of the power back to the fans and the musicians.

I dont like the "here ya go fans,here's your brand new star of the day" thing thats going on.

Present to me the talent thats out there from all corners of the country and let ME decide who I wanna listen to.Thats all Im asking for.

about 2 years ago I was in a band and had all sorts of crazy ideas.. I wanted to bring a sound to the stage that would be very different from the other bands we've seen and opened for.. We were only 3 guys at first.. I would have a cassette player hooked up to the P.A. with some pre recorded bits.. I was playing guitar and singing, and playing boards.. I thought once we worked out the bugs it would have been sonically interesting.. I would switch from guitar to keys in a flash, and actually reach over and hit play on the cassette.. (this was before loops, and no midi) After awhile, the other 2 guys got sick of what I was trying to do.. They thought we should just get back to the basic drums, guitar,and bass thing.. I didnt understand.. I have seen many local bands and they were all the same, with the same dynamic and sound for their entire set.. I thought that was boring unless the band was really special at what they did..

I would bring 3 guitars with me all tuned different.. the bass player got sick of the alternate tuning thing and wanted to go the standard E route.. Since I started out as a drummer, I think the drummer got tired of me showing him exactly how the beat should go.. I began to get a reputation as being a control freak.. Eventually we had to split up.. When I hear their music today, I see they wouldn't have been happy in the long haul because their music is pretty basic and straight forward..

I really think that all of my stuff could be reproduced live in some way because it all had to be played to be recorded.. Even the drum loops could be played by a drummer..

I really wanted to do music that didn't fit in any one particular style.. From the mellowest Pink Floyd sound, to the heaviest death metal sound.. Like play a heavy song, give the crowd a break by playing a mellow one, then switch to something scientific sounding, then into a straight up rock tune etc.

I have never heard a band do this the way I picture it, and maybe that's because it wouldn't work.. I don't mean a NIN sound either.. I always pictured a combination of Black Sabbath, the Beatles, Rush, the Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Slayer.. Most people who like one of these bands, don't like the others..

Now I just pretend.. Whenever I'm singing, I always treat it like I am playing live.. I guess it's O.K. to be a control freak when you are alone..

I have never made a dime off music, but I am in debt now because of it.. Instead of buying someone a Valentines day gift, I will buy myself an expansion card for my synth..

People have told me that I should try to sell my music, but I wouldn't have the balls to ask someone to buy something from me.. Actually, I find myself happy if they even accept a CD from me for free..

Today as I'm snaking out someones nasty toilet bowl, or laying in the dirt of their crawl space, a song will come to me and I'll jot a line or two down on a piece of scrap paper, or even my hand..

It's funny because sometimes I have to play hooky from work just to finish a song.. I find I have trouble focusing on basic things while a song is unfinished..

I ask myself why sometimes.. Why is music such a priority for me when I don't make any money from it, and most people think it's too strange anyway..

Man, if I could find 2 other guys who feel the same way, I would give up everything to play and give it a shot.. That probably will never happen, so off to work I go..

Bill Assumpcao - VBR is variable bit rate.. It sounds better than the basic 128.. I think chrisharris hooked you up with an encoder in your other thread.. If you have any questions, there are many people here who could explain it better than me..

I enjoy your rants man.LOL.I found it pretty interesting even on 3 hours of sleep.:)You sound a lot like most successful musicians.What you see as a definite vision of how things should be done, is seen as being a control freak by others.Thats the price you pay for being driven.The ones who dont understand your vision get left behind.No hard feelings,they're not on your wavelength.

You will find 2 other guys who are just as much of a freak( :D ) as you are with the same musical goals and it will be good when it finally happens.

Now get back to the reality of "today" and snake some drains.:D

I know why......it's because this is your art. It's like a painter sitting in his studio cranking out paintings in an attempt to get his vision on canvas..........it's like a sculptor chipping into a block of granite to see if he can capture the drape of cloth over a womans leg........it's like a poet with reams of paper filled with images and thoughts that no one will ever hear.

I doubt Van Gogh was driven by a desire to become a painting superstar. I can't image that Renoir painted 'cause he thought that future generations would be studying him. No....they painted because it was in their souls and they were driven to do so.......and you're no different. I recognize myself in you. At my age, many of my friends don't understand why I still love it so. Well you know what? Neither do I. But I have no choice in the matter.....music will drive me until the day I die. And you know what I hope those at my funeral say about me? That I was a MUSICIAN. All capital letters. Music defines me and when people ask my wife if I play music around the house she always tells them, "Steve is music."
And so are you my friend, so are you.........

Well said. Music is a strange mistress for me. There have been times I have left her for years on end, but she always seems to find her way back to my door. I always seem to let her back in.

Samicide... you've got the right attitude. and...I liked all the groups you listed...very much... and I like your music very much....and I like you attitude towards music very much. You're even kinda like a dickhead like me at times!!!:eek: naw!!..

If I lived within decent driving distance to you, I would definately look you up to see if I was worthy or not to try and be part of "something"...without a doubt. Unfortunately, with a house and wife, I "can't" just pull up stakes and see whats up...but when I was 20, I would have pulled up to your front door without asking first, and just knocked. (I even had the "van", PA, and all the gtr equipment you could need then). However, [not like it is going to happen] but should you ever move this way [like Kentucky is really bustling with music opportunities to showcase], PLEEZE let me know.


btw....a self employed plumber around here would do fantastic.. Most service oriented people (carpenters, HVAC people, masons...etc) do VERY well. not that I am suggesting... because it would be about the music.... not the toilet snakes

also(for me)...it is not about being the "star".. It is about being able to afford the musical equipment you want to use, and finding nice places to play it at.


Kramer... yeah..."here, let me shove this new musical sensation down your throat"...as said by the "industry... I don't like it either.

Finally got a chance to drag my busy ass into the clinic... Had to make sure I got to hear what you were up to... This is fucking awesome.. I love the breaks, and the british chick talking..... Drums sound totally real dude....

I especially love the Low-Fi Drum passages, with the screaming behind.... (The one at 2:19 for the sake of giving you an exact time)

During the rock parts with the full band parts, I love the orcheastra in there.

Anyways... Great tune dude.. Creative as hell.. Sound is great.

You and Rob Zombie should be in partnership..:D

Love it man-that opening drum sound is excellent-with the scream in the background. Gives a great spaciousness to the mix-wide and deep. Your usual great big guitar sounds and great arranging sound choices/mixing etc etc etc----I've listened to this like 6 times in a row now-very cool if you put your player on repeat-hard to tell where it starts and ends...This is just great stuff man---awesome.
 
I always look forward to hearing your stuff. You never know what to expect and its always good. 2/14 would be good soundtrack stuff.

We seem to be on the same plain when it comes to doing music. I also like the same bands you mentioned earlier. Man, hearing your stuff makes me want to finally go out and get the keys I want. I havent wrote much recently, cause I want to get more creative and further out there.

Im 40 and burned out on playing live although I wouldnt mind playing a few shows again. I like the studio and always have. Im more at peace there. I could care less about a major deal, but would like to make an extra grand a month with my music eventually, just to pay for more gear-lol. Like you Im happy to give away CD's. Its like shareing a part of myself with others and telling the music industry to fuck off at the same time.......:)

Steely Dan didnt tour until 20 years after they made it. They loved the studio and invited top notch musicians to play on their stuff. They made bank and did it their way. Im all for doing it a differnt way from the options that are out there now. If they say it cant be done, it probably can be done....
Your music is a cut above the rest. Go drop some CD's at college radio stations. Im sure eventually you will make some bucks, cause ya probably dont care if ya do.

no real mix comments besides the fact that i'm envious of your genius. i agree with crawdad, your stuff should be in film. at least the stuff like this. Did you ever see the movie PI? That kind of stuff is what I'm talking about.

The only thing I like better than the song is your post in this thread explaining your breakup with the previous band. Those fucking guys were very shortsighted! Good riddance. Stick with it Sam, you definitely are unique.

I love the combination of zepplin drum loops and screaming!

Very good stuff. I'm lacking detailed comments cause I'm in awe actually. Your stuff always just strikes me like....genius.
