Something for me: Lovely.
On a personal preference level I'd prefer mellotron strings to the synth you have (I scored a set of tron samples - full set one mono wav for each note which I cut & paste into a track) simply because they are distinctive whereas the one you have is a nice anonymous sound to me & my bad ears.

Wee update for ya. I had the fella round and we recorded down 5 more songs.
We've decided to work from a live capture of his guitar and vocals and build from there.

Here's an example of one of the raw recordings. This is your twenty second mix - master verb + vocal comp is pretty much all your hear.

I'm very pleased to say there's no eq on the guitar or voice. :)

I'll post up more when I get some work done of building these up.

Very nice. I like that song. Heard it on YouTube. Nice to hear a good recording of it.

Looking forward to hearing the progress.

His voice is truly awesome. If nicotine is turning his "singing voice to shit," then mine is already a big, steaming pile of dung! (And I didn't even need the help of nicotine!) :)

The song is odd to me, in that the lyrics really don't fit the music at all. These are really deep and melancholy lyrics, but when set against this kind of Vaudeville backdrop, they tend to lose their potency in my opinion. I'm all for mixing it up and trying new things and all, so I can dig the juxtaposition in that regard, but, IMHO, I think these fine lyrics deserve more in the way of the musical setting. Just my two cents.

Great balanced sound though. Nice job! :)

Nice Steenamaroo. The recording is well done. The singer is real good, a lot like Arlo Guthrie. I like it.

Ha! tell me about it!!

I hadn't really thought about it, but yeah, point taken.
Admittedly, I kinda like it but that's music for ya, isn't it?
IDK, maybe I'm more receptive to it having heard his other tunes....Maybe not.
I think he's managed to cover a pretty good range without straying outside his territory.

I currently have him reviewing these live takes and if he's happy with them, work will commence. :)

Nice Steenamaroo. The recording is well done.
Thanks man. Nothing fancy at all to it. Two 81s and a 7b. :)

Hey Steeno. I listened to the first song in the first post - dunno if that's the updated mix. Sounds really, really nice - you could play it on the radio now. My only nit is the crash cymbals towards the end - as I've found with Addictive Drums, they don't quite sound right. I don't know if it's a simple level thing or if they need to be squished more, maybe take samples from elsewhere? Anyway, overall sounds excellent as usual!

Very Good, and very commercial... I almost thought this was this was a viral commercial post.

The vocal sets the tone and sits perfectly. For me the bass drum (and bass) is too fat and should be crisper. It weighs too much on the vocal which sounds great early with just a light guitar.

Oh man, that's some great news!

We're motoring on with the rest of the tunes and I guess we'll revisit them all for fine tuning towards the end of the session.

I am taking note of all these nits though, so thanks for those guys.

I don't know which song I'm supposed to be listening to, so I pulled up this one. Not my thing, but it sounds like a great recording. I don't like the reverb on the vocals, but I hate reverb, so take that with a grain of salt.

Don't forget the nits :)

P.S. My comments were based on "something for me".

Hey Greg. The track you linked is just the live foundation for a third song.
The other two tracks in the OP are closer to completion.

Thanks for listening though.

Okay, listening now. Something for Me? Sounds great. Thick low end without being slushy. Instrumentation sounds great. I HATE this guy's voice. It's folkie and midrangey and makes me want to punch him in the throat. Lol. Not really, okay maybe a little, but it does seem irritatingly midrangey to me. I guess that's just how he sounds as the vocal take sounds clean. I just couldn't listen to this for any extended period of time. His vocal style hits my ear buttons the wrong way. Good production though. You've done a fantastic job.

Fair play Greg.
Thanks for the kind words.

I was sold on his voice the second I heard him but I think when a voice is strong and dominant like that it's bound to rub some people the wrong way. Billy Corgan's voice goes straight through me; I know how you feel ;)

Cheers man.

Oh yeah, his voice is annoying too.

Hey Steen,

Just checking in on the status of this project. I noticed on Dan's FB page he mentions "finishing his new album." I'm guessing that he's referring to this? If so, I definitely want to buy it when it's done. So please let us know! Thanks! :)

Hey hey there.
The projects kinda on hold at the minute.
We more or less finished up the two singles and he's keen to release one of them ASAP, as far as I know.

With regard to the rest of the album, he has teamed up with some other local musicians so I think some time is being spent rehearsing with them before any more recording happens.
It could be a long haul. Last I spoke to him he was talking about an October release.

For the meantime I'm working away at a new 10 track record with Pete Gardiner. That'll keep me ticking over for a bit.

Thanks for asking. :)
