Yeah, I can see that. He sounds very mature for our age.
As long as the production does that justice, I think I'm gonna be a really happy man with these sessions.

Any more comments are welcome; Other than that I'll report back after the next few sessions.

Something For Me - Sounds much better with the revised mix. Such a GREAT song! (and production)

Kiss Goodbye - I really like this song. Quirky little country ditty. I was disappointed to hear sh*t edited out at the end of one line lol - made me laugh also though.

The mix sounds great to me as it is, maybe turn the banjo solo up slightly but for me, it's sounds really good.

I'm no producer though, just a sh*tkicker that records a bit. ;-)

I would like to know the name of this artist and find out more about him. Definitely following this post to hear more. I would buy the album based on these 2 songs alone.

Hey Clean. Thanks for revisiting.
The banjo 'solo' is really just filler cos there's gonna be a harmonica solo over the top of it. Hopefully there'll be resonator guitar in there somewhere too.
It may still get turned up once the harmonica's in, but for now I just left the section low.

Thanks for mentioning it though. At least I know you're really listening. ;)

I don't think he has recorded anything since 2009, but there's a wealth of stuff on bandcamp/youtube under 'dolbro dan'.
He's come to me to 'commercialise' his productions, at least a little bit.

I think he's aiming for a local radio debut and I've had two bands on radio lately, so fingers crossed.

FOR ANYONE who said they may buy his record, I'll be sure to post up here when it's ready. Thanks. :)

Great, thank you for that. I'll check him out shortly.

I think it will sound great with a harmonica on it. I've just been playing along to it with my ukulele. Maybe you could try adding another subtle rhythm track of uke or mandolin. I'm going to tune up my mandolin now and play along. Really like the song. Sounds really really good.

That's pretty cool! I'd love to hear what you come up with man.
I mean, we're actively looking for some kind of slide instrument contribution for the more country tune.
Mandolin might not go a miss too if you were interested.
If I had one I'd probably record a track down.

We're working to clicks. 117 6/8 and 135 4/4 if memory serves.

LOL! That's incase I forget for radio.
I think we're gonna put in a bu-caw! chicken noise or something.

Of course there'll be no edits on the album.

I just looked him up and checked out some more of his stuff. Yeah, very impressive. He's definitely a talented guy! I'll be following him for sure. And you did a really nice job recording him and capturing him. These recordings sound a great deal more "commercialized" than his other stuff for sure! (I mean that in a good way.) :)

Thank you Beagle.
It's funny, I offered to record him in a few years back because I heard him live and was very impressed.
He was working to tape in an analog studio at the time.

In a way I'm glad he didn't me up on the offer because I feel I'm in a much better position to work with him now.

I echo what Beagle said above. He is a very talented individual and you are adding to that talent by giving him (in my opinion) a better, more commercial sound. Having listened to a lot of his stuff already, I can honestly say, in 2 songs, you have done a grand job and I prefer what you've shared to all else I've listened to.

Keep it up and keep us posted. I'm looking forward to more.

Sounds great. love the intro and the vocals and the bass. I guess I wish the drums sounded, uh, earthier or something...dirtier? I dunno. I assume these are simulated drums of some kind? I haven't read the other comments and only had time to listen once all the way through, but it's a fun tune and well produced.

The very first line was funny to me..."she hangs out in banger"? I assume it's Bangor, and someplace in the U.K.?

There's a small city named Bangor in Maine, but rather than pronounce it "Banger", it comes out more like "Bangoah".

Yeah there are two Bangor's in the UK. One in Wales and the other in Ireland. I assume he means the Ireland one as he is Irish ;-)

Booming bass drums are fine, and yours isn't even booming.
I am a drummer, and those drums sound fine to me.
I also like upfront vox, so I think it all sounds great.
Too many people make a punchy bass drum. They spend
all this time shoving crap into the drum and putting these
three ply heads on it, and then, you are left with something
that sounds nothing like a bass drum. Bonham was boomy.
Listen to early Beatles. Clicky-bass drums drive me insane.
Well done on doing it your way! Great tune.

Great songs. I wish I could add some impute on the mix or arrangement or instrumentation, but to me it all sounds great. When I hear tunes like these, I find myself more optimistic about the future of music. I will be anxiously waiting for the rest of the songs in this project. I would buy this album.

Thanks for the comments fellas, and yeah, it's Bangor N.I. Here it's pronounced Banger (hard G).

Kiss Goodbye link has been updated with today's work. It seems to have been the less popular tune so far but hopefully today's additions will help that out.

I'm with you man. I think I'll play with a few plugs to see if I can 'dirty' them up a little. They're too clean and straight forward I think.

I see what you mean now with the Banjo low and Harmonica over the top. Sounds real nice. Still love that Banjo solo though.

Kiss Goodbye is my favourite of the two this far. Ready for the next installment ;-)

I had missed the link for this one until now. I saw some people referencing it, but I didn't see it. Anyway, as I song, this is definitely my least favorite of the two. It's performed and recorded/mixed really well, and his vocals are awesome again, but the song in general doesn't really connect for me. Just a subjective thing. It's funny, because it reminds me a bit of "Why Does It Always Rain on Me" by Travis - maybe because of the chord progression and groove/instrumentation, but that song hits for me where this one misses a bit.

Anyway, cool banjo work and harmonica solo. I'm still very impressed with him as an artist.

Hey Beagle + Clean. Thanks for the comments.
Banjo's getting some great rep which is pleasing cos I played that. :):)

I think 'Kiss Goodbye' is my favourite right now (your last mix is your best mix and all that), but in the long run I can definitely see 'Something for me' winning out.

Either way, these are both close enough to finished that we're ready to move on. Stay tuned folks. ;)

Paul,

Sounds great on first listen. I'll listen critically when I'm not so tired, and I can hear it on monitors. Where do you find these guys?
