Hi guys,
I started working with a new guy last Wednesday.
We're working towards twelve songs. Two are done and ready for sharing right now.

There will be tweaks and what not to both, but here are the 90% mixes, if you like.

I'm not using Soundcloud because we don't really want his music getting around locally yet.

Hope you all enjoy. Any tips welcome, as always.

PS. I'm looking for a slide instrument for the other tune. If anyone wants to contribute a simple bit of lap/pedal steel, please PM me. It's done to a click, so I wouldn't necessarily need a polished recording.

I really like it. Sounds awesome on my set up here. My only gripe would be the kick drum is a bit 'boomy' (for want of a better word) for my personal taste.

Great song and delivery though. The recording sounds real nice. Vocal reminds me of someone, a bit like Don Mclean. I would definitely like to hear more.

I'm sure others will be along shortly to offer good advice and feedback.

kick drum is a bit 'boomy'.......

Both true, but I can only fix one of them. ;P

Just kidding. Thanks for the feedback. :)
I'll take a look at that kick.

I really enjoyed this. I really like the song, and the lead vocal sounds great. It's very up front, but it didn't bother me like I thought it would when I very first heard the level. He has a nice voice, and I second the Don McLean vibe.

The drums were probably my least favorite part. Are they samples? They don't sound like a real kit to me. Plus they seem mixed too low in my opinion all around. And I agree that the kick needs a bit more definition.

The strings here and there are a nice touch.

Anyway, really nice song, with lots of nice little surprises along the way, including the major III chord in the wordless "ooh" refrain and the little extensions to the end of a few verse phrases. Some really nice lyrics too.

Cool stuff! :)

Cheers Beagle. As always, the drums are the part that needs the most attention. They are indeed sampled drums.
It's a recurring theme in my clinic offerings.

I was gona mention that in the OP then I thought I'd leave it to your ears.

I'm glad I was right about them being samples! :) I'd feel pretty dumb if they turned out to be real!

What did you use for the samples?

I use addictive drums.
I mapped out a pretty generic beat and the song writer offered up a midi file of amendments last night.

I think his suggestions are great, but there's a good chance that they stand out a little too much at the minute making things less natural.

very nice, and i agree with the kick drum sounding a little thumpy or boomy, not a lot of drum sound, sounds like just the frequency of it is bumping through.

What a sweet tune! Excellent use of dynamics. The whole mix really breathes. I was trying to find something to nitpick about, but I got nothing. This is just really nice...

Hi Steen

For my taste, I'd pull the main vocal back a bit... I'm subconciously reaching for the volume control whenever he hits an "out there" note... and at the end with the harmonised vocal - I'm talking the first song here.

I recognise the Addictive snare... PITA to get a decent sound I reckon, but this one's good. I'd turn it up just a touch... but that's just me.

All in all, nice!

Cheers

Hi Armistice,
Thanks for the comments (and CBS+Strat). Much appreciated.

We've established that vocal level is going to be a fighting point through these sessions.
Honestly, I'd wanna pull back a little too. I mean, he has to be out front, but maybe not just this much?

I'll be keeping it in mind at least. Cheers.

Excellent as always, Paul! :thumbs up:

So what's the deal ..... no drummers on that Island you live on? :D

You on strings once again?

I always fight with clients to get the vocals up like they are here. If the talent is there - flaunt it. That's what I say.

Can't wait to here the rest of this collection. I take it that he them all written now, Right?

Hey Henry.
Ahhhh the "Moresound seal of approval" - Lovely. :)

The fake drums is more a space thing than anything - Working out of a garage man.
I'm on the strings as usual but they're synthetic this time.

Yes, he has all the songs written and ready to go. These two took a week (4 2-3 hour sessions), so hopefully there'll be a few more mixes every week.

Cheers. :)

Very nice tune man,

I like what you did with the background vocals... he's definitely a good singer.

If I had to say something for the sake of saying something, I'd say that I'd like to hear the drums come up a wee bit. Or maybe it's because the vocals are so upfront...

Either way, great tune/mix :thumbs up:

This seems to be the common theme. Thanks for your honesty.

Some say it's a good thing, others not so much, so I think I'll run it past the singer and see how he feels.

Can't wait to post more tunes folks; The response has been fantastic!
Thanks all.

Something for me: What a great and lovely song! The voice is not the average, that's good!
Nice mixed and nice to listen to. And I like the subtle organ in the background! I would consider buying it.

Agreed. I doesn't sound natural in comparison to the rim click.

Really? Wow that's cool. I would have guessed older. I don't mean that in a bad way at all. There's just a maturity there I suppose, and the Don McLean thing is really strong too. I really it though; I hope he does well.
