Here's another drum newb with a clip :D - I can't play the drums (I'll practice when I can and get better), but still think I can benefit from adding real drum tracks to my songs.

Also, as I mentioned in another thread, I don't have a real kick drum (or real toms - I've got rototoms, though) and I don't plan to get them any time soon, but I set up my snare, hihat, and a cymbal and played along to a couple of songs - here's a brief clip:

I used two Oktava MC-012s as overheads, a tab-funkenwerk-tranny SM57 on the top of the snare, and a SM81 on the bottom of the snare.

How does this sound to you? Any suggestions for improvements?

perfectly respectable start for what you have here. i think the snare sounds kinda thin--i'd blend more of that 57 in for the snare's natural midrange punch. hi-hat sounds bright and clear, but not too sizzly--nice.

simply put, i think the high end sounds good, which is usually the easy part (as long as you're not hell-bent on boosting the crap out of it--a common mistake that you're not making here). once you add a full kit you'll really get tested with lows and low mids.

thanks!! I see myself using sampled kick drum and toms for a while (except for roto-toms, I guess), so I keep doin' what I'm doin' and work on the snare sound. Between the top and bottom mics, there's a bunch of room for adjustments.
