I'm looking for some budget "monitors" for mixing. I'm trying to keep it under $250 a pair if thats possible. I have a decent reciever that can hook up to my computer so I could go passive without adding the cost for amplifictation unless passives aren't generally recommended. I've heard that the passive versions usually get you more bang for the buck if you have some amplification. I've been looking into Yorkville YSM1i, Hafler M5, Tannoy proto J, Samson Resolv, Alesis...From what I hear the yorkvilles would be best, Tannoy second, Hafler third, Samson 4th, Alesis 5th. About right??

Where are the best prices/reliable places for monitors? Any other suggestions? I know I should be listening to these but no where around here to demo, but I'll make sure I order from somwhere with a return policy. But for now I'll take your guy's word for it. Thanks.

Passives are fine. You can always upgrade your amp in the future when you have more cash if you need to. I have heard Tannoy Reveals and found them to be quite natural sounding (not excessively bright or harsh) and they seem very popular.

Another option is to go to your hifi store and check out some hifi speakers. Some of them (eg B&W) are accurate and suitable for mixing. Make sure you check out their measured performance to ensure they are accurate as well as listening. These articles may help.
