1st New Track for 2013

The above is based on recent comments

The above is the same as on top BUT with some "SPARKLE" added to the top end.
Interestingly, based on recent comments, there's reverb on the drums, mellotron and only one guitar. That guitar was run through a multi FX unit (Yamaha FX500) & the setting is a personal construction that creates a droning distant sound. It's runs for the vast majority of the track: cutting out a couple of times to create contrast.
The other guitars only have a little EQ and compression where needed - there is the Big Muff clone on the outro guitar as well.
Elton - I added some brightness to the outermost guitars in response to your comment - or do you think they require meat?
Triple M - the drop is deliberate & for contrast. I'll get back to the snare soon.
XLR - thank you.
Queepy - ta muchly - I'm a sucker for a feedback yowl fade out.
I think the "darkness" may be due toall the guitars in this track being taken from a mic'd cab instead of DI and that I've selected mic placements away from the cone. The cumulative effect is a general "darkening" I suppose. It's something to consider for the next track.

Sounding good Ray, the thing that struck me most was while listening in chill mode, how my mind latched onto the various tracks in turn and they all come through like finding gems as one allows the mind to prioritise each in turn. Good stuff.

All the best

Hey Ray. I was able to hear most of this last night before getting interrupted a few times. I hope to get back to it for more in-depth listening and also hope to hear subsequent versions.

I listened to the mix with "sparkle" above and it had your patented guitar sounds and chord progressions that I'd recognize instantly in a blind listening test.

This mix as a starting point is light years ahead of beginning efforts of yours from years past. Well done so far to both you and Greg.

Sounds good Ray. Nice overall sound. Nice to hear Greg playing something under 293bpm. :D

Drums sound good, but I wouldn't have known this is Greg if you didn't tell me. The drum machine intro really threw me off until I read that's what it is.

Have you not posted this song with vocals before? One of the chord changes is very familiar.

RAMI,
Thanks mate. No, this one hasn't had vocals before but I'm pretty limited in my range of chords and changes so I think it sounds familiar because parts of it probably are - as mentioned by Heat; my progressions can be picked a couple of bars ahead.
Greg really does play in a different place when he did this one - shows his versatility doesn't it. I can't play evenly at his type of tempo so don't even start.
Heat,
thank you. Yep, I can be picked can't I! Signature sound or same/same is all a muchness I guess. Greg did a fine job on this I agree.
Tim,
Ta. I can get lost inside it myself - that's a problem for me though as I switch focus and lose perspective.
Any preference between sparkle & non sparkle? I THINK sparkle isn't kind to the cymbals and may have to group the guitars & throw the EQ on them exculsively.

Sound good Ray. The bass fits better in the most recent version, I can pick it out very clearly.

Personally Ray, the version without the sparkle sounds better to my ear. There are already a lot of transient peaks in the top end by virtiue of the instrumentation and how the tracks are mixed. My fear with the brighter version is that at high volumes the top end will start to dominate when in close proximity to the speakers. I should have mentioned my preference in my last post, but to be fair I had a busy one that day, but wanted to get a listen in as I was already late to the party.

All the best

Tim

ma1225,
There isn't a melody yet; neither instrumentally or vocally. When those components are present there'll be a melodic part over the intro.

This is a pretty cool song, I definitely dig the last mix you posted. I can hear everything pretty clearly and wouldn't change much! Would definitely be interested to hear with vocals and such!

Here's the final mix until I can, at some stage, add a guitar solo & vocal.
keevhren,
I'll let you know when I have the final componenets mate. Thanks for the comment.
Phrasemaker,
Thanks for the added detail Tim. I added some "sparkle" to some guitars only for this mix so the overall sound of the track should be the same but with a little less darkness in the guitars.
DavidK,
Thanks DK. It's a little heard to get the poor bass to peak out from under so many guitars - a little EQ carving seems to have assisted.
