fully balanced transformer-less circuits found in highly acclaimed recording consoles = cheap opamps and no character

Quote from Black Lion Auteur site:
"We also like classic transformer-based designs because of the characteristic they lend to the audio signal. Because of this, we added a 600 ohm M-6 silicon steel output transformer to give the audio a thick quality that's reminiscent of a prized vintage preamp. It’s the best of both worlds in our opinion. The preamp is dual channel and features phase, +48vdc phantom power, and 10dB output signal pad."

There is no hype about quality transformers and discrete op amp designs they simply are a better quality audio path and cost money to make heck even to build a preamp with input and output transformers and a single discrete opamp will run 250 in parts.

...you obviously haven't heard the Auteur, or read many of the positive reviews on the pro-audio sites comparing the Auteur to many other high-end pres of all design types...I've learned, from owning and using many different preamps ranging from expensive vintage Neve (iron in, iron out) to inexpensive straight-line op-amp designs (Roger Nichol's beloved Rane MS1-B) that there's no rule-of-thumb as to what sounds good in what applications...all quality preamps are viable tools in the arsenal...opinions vary, but classic designs endure...

Sounds like the ACMP pres, except more 'spensive :)

kidvybes -- I'm kind of pissed at myself that I didn't pick up an auteur at the intro price -- do you have one? I guess my only consolation is that I've accumulated enough gear to warrant a "catch-up" period in my skillset - that is, I need to learn how to use what I gots already for awhile :) -- but that preamp looks cool, and I love what they did to my MOTU Traveler.

Prolly shouldn't be posting, because I have little to offer on the original subject. I have a heavily modified cheap tube mic that I'd put up against the better ones, though. So I guess I should say, if you're in the mood to mod, keep an eye out for TnC's mod kits for the ACM-1200 mics and consider getting a kit and either a 1200 or maybe another mic it would work on (not sure what those are, but maybe the Apex 460?). Just a thought, and really just an excuse to post in this thread -- there's plenty to be said for getting one that works well out of the box.

Fishmed -- does BeezNeez have a current or former association with Peluso? Not that that's here nor there, but maybe they get their machining from the same place?

I really can't say, but from the thread on GS, it sounds like he has his own setup there (downunder). Listening to the clips on the thread, I am very impressed with the quality of the clips. That mic is on my wish list... after I get few I alreay own mod'ed.

I believe he was formerly a Peluso rep/distributor in Australia. His mics do look interesting and the prices seem really good. There's more extended discussion of these on the GS board as some people there have bought and used them.

...nope...I, like yourself, am kicking myself for not grabbing one of the intro specials...that makes 3 intro specials I passed up (regretfully)...the Auteur, the Kel HM-2d & HM-7u...got the Kels now, but the Auteur will have to wait...;)

Hi Everyone,
I'm looking to invest in a tube mic or at least a higher end mic than my Rode NT1-a for Vox and maybe some other applications. I was thinking about the Rode K2 and maybe replacing the valve or going with the Mojave MA-200. Does anyone have any suggestions for tubes or solid-state in this price range for vox and if possible some other accomodations like acoustic instruments? Thanks.

Lank

The Mojave is a good choice. You might also consider the AT 4060 which you can pick up used for under $1000. Another possibility, depending on what your voice sounds like, is the AKG Solidtube. For my own voice, that's my favorite mic. It's a bit on the dark side but it adds some fullness and sounds really good up close.

I did hear it i liked it actully, but I did prefer the 1272 cause it adds this kind of compression to the vocal, but thats what transformers do. It sounds good for what it is and no I didn't say that it was bad. I'm saying the design is cheap to make. It's called the 5 dollar preamp for a reason. It's worth the money but hard for me to swallow paying 500 for 50 dollars in parts thats just me though :)

the rane ms1 is good but if you get a burr brown in there it will sound fantastic for about 125 bucks you can't beat it

At4060

Has anyone used the AT4060 ? I listened to its audio clips against the other 40 Series ATs and really I think it does sound smoother and more rounded of a sound. It is a subtle difference though, not huge. Really all of the 40 series sound pretty good but you can hear a little more brightness on the 4047, 4050, 4040. Anyone ever stack this up to other priced tubes in this range? Rode k2, Mojave-MA200, etc.? Thanks.

Lank
