1979 College Thesis Ressurected

In order to get my degree (roll of TP) in sound recording I had to turn in a recording. Back in 1979 a few classmates and I went into a half inch 4 track studio and produced this original tune "Dinosaur Rock". We got an A because the teacher could not figure out how we got the vocals to sound this way in a studio that had only a spring reverb, 1 channel parametric eq, and a compressor. All of his hypothisises were wrong :-)

Some months later when I was at the Boston School of Electronic Music I took the half inch 4 track master and punched in 4 new tracks on a half inch 8 track deck. (Yes, it isn't recomended, but it can be done) The new tracks were vintage analog Arp, Moog, and Aries synth tracks consisting of dinosaur screams and bubbling tar pits (love that sample and hold).

The original half inch tape is long gone. All my copies were believed lost. Then one day I got en email from a girl friend from that time of my life. She had a really horrible dupe on a shedding cassette and wanted to know if I wanted it.

The tape was so bad I couldn't salvage it in a way that I would be able to present it here. I did manage to find an older mix from before the synths were added on a slightly better shedding cassette in a box in my cellar.

What I am presenting to you here is that original 4 track mix from a cassette, restored with all new bubbling tar pits and dinosaur screams added. Here is Audry Space Leper:

You can try the URL without the ":81". Sometimes Comcast/ATT Broadband/MediaOne blocks port 80. Try this:

 
Ah! That much coveted sound of tape compression- the smaller the tape the "tighter" the compression. That's why cassettes always make a mix sound crisp and tight.

This would be a fun tune to do with some loops and all the digital funkiness we have around today. :)

Don't you love those things that bubble up from the distant past and make you think "Am I still that person? God, I hope not!"
 
I have already spoken with my current song writer / arranger and he is going to help me record a whole new one. The first task is to write more verses :)
