while searching and seaching the web for bargain monitors i came accros these speakers being sold at maplin (uk site, not sure if you have maplin electronics in other countries) and thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.

the specs say they are 160 watts (2 times 80 wpmpo) active speakers and they come in two choices of colours and cost £49

i need to know more, are they too good to be true at this price, i found that it isn't an error.

Has anyone got these and do they sound any good??

do you think that i should buy these. i mean even if they just sound o.k it might be worth me buying them so that i have some monitors for now while i save and save for a decent (and expensive, as they all are) pair

if anyone has got them or buys them in the future please let me know what they are like

thanks

it doesnt say what make they are on the website ( www.maplin.co.uk ) but that is the case with most things they sell, even the really expensive stuff

i know people who have bought stuff from them before and say they have been happy, they have high street shops aswell

maybe i should just buy them anyway

any comments on what you think i should do would be helpfull

thanks

rizla - Maplin (for our US friends it's the UK equivalent of Radio Shack) sell mostly rubbish, and their branded stuff is more epxensive than other outlets. If it seems too good to be true, well...

(By the way I like your user name - one of my songs which we use to close our live set is called Rizla so if you came to a gig you could hear your name many times over:) )

that would be good

radio shack eh, maybe they sell these monitors there too. i'l have a look

even if they are not very good speakers surley they must sound better than going through your hifi as they have their own power

and i wont be able to afford a pair of quality monitors for a long long time

someone somewhere must own these and have an opinion on them, for £50 someone must have bought them

i looked on the radioshack site and couldnt find them, they r probably exclusive to maplin electronics.

what does everyone think, if you were just starting out in home recording would you buy these cheap monitors

any opinions would be helpfull

thanks

rizla - they are multimedia speakers (I found them on the website). They would be even worse than hi-fi speakers. Save the money towards something better. (I was just joking about Radio Shack)

ok, thanks mate

i think i will just go through my amp and speakers then, its just im a bit worried about damaging it, but i guess i will just have to be carefull with my volumes

how do you know they are just multimedia speakers, 160 watts seems a bit powerfull for multimedia speakers

don't multimedia speakers just have one wire with a jack connection that goes into your soundcard, but with active studio monitors you have 2x 1/4 conections, one for left and one for right. Am i right in thinking this?

i think i will phone maplin and ask them what connections the speakers have, if they have two 1/4 connections they are monitors, or are they?
