Hi, everybody. I want to record my band at the practice room or at live gigs. I don't want to spend a lot of time configuring, or learning how to use new machines. I've been looking around and have three choices: Tascam 2488, Korg D1600MKII and Zoom MRS1608CD.
Could someone give some advice for my final choice?
Thank you very much.

Don't you think that is overkill for what you want to do? Maybe get just a 4 track recorder.

Very clever, Boy. That's the kind of help I love to get.

Then spend five times the amount of money on a 16 track and still end up with the same product. Be my guest.

This is the same sort of thing I wanted to do but for budget constraints I just went with a used MR-8 and a "B-word" mixing board. I would love it if someone would offer just a bare-bones digital recorder with eight lines in and no fancy effects or bounce features. In my situation everyone plays through a mic so if I had eight pres I could just record and do the sound editing later on my computer. All I could find were expensive hard disc recorders with massive features I don't want to pay for. Hence the cheap MR-8.

Good Stand alone DAW

Rudy,

I have a Yamaha AW16G. You can get them new for around $900 if you shop around. You can sometimes browse the "Gear For Sale" section of www.aw16G.com and find used machines for even less. This is a very good stand alone machine for home recording applications. You can record 8 tracks simultaneously and I find the machine very easy to use.

I agree with an earlier post though....if all you are doing is recording practice sessions or live gigs a 4 track/small mixer solution would work just fine. You could implement that solution (not counting mics/cables) for under $250 if you search for used gear. Much of the functionality of a 16 track would be overkill unless you planned on doing some home studio type stuff in the future.

Regards,

Bart
