I'm looking to buy a 16 channel analog mixer in the $1000-1500 range. I've had a look at the 1604 VLZ-Pro and the A&H 16:2. The Soundcraft SpiritStudio also seems to be another option although it seems to be a discontinued product. From their web site I didn't see a current product that would fall into this category.

Anyone with any thoughts on these products, ie how they compare to each other. Preferences? Warnings? Other suggestions? I don't mind spending the same amount on used equipment if that presents more/better options.

As always, thanks!

Brad

I notice that there is quite a few Mackie 24-4 VLZ's on ebay for a reasonable price. Anyway have any experience or thoughts on these?

How bout the new Mackie Onyx consoles?

Sound on Sound reviews theme in the October issue.

Mackie makes solid boards, but the Soundcraft boards have better mic pre's.

Yeah, the 1640 looks interesting. Anyone had any experience with these. Not sure if the firewire option is a big deal to me, but I'd be interested in hearing how the rest of the board compares to the 1604 VLZ Pro.

There seems to be an overwhelming number of Soundcraft models out there. Any specific ones in this price range you might suggest I start researching?

Thanks.

Check out the SOS mag forums. Some folks in the UK are saying these things roc k and like the pre's better than even Souncraft and AH. Not sure if the 1640 is shipping yet. One thing I like about some of the Soundcraft and AH boards is their switchable direct outs for either pre or post EQ.

I got a A&H 24 channel 8 buss for less than 1000 bucks. Soundcraft 200 series are 24 channel 4 buss for about 600. A used CR1604 Mackie goes for 250 bucks and sound better than the VLZ... but only 6 XLR inputs.

Brad,

I have 2 consoles I don't need anymore,

Mackie 24x8 with meterbridge

TASCAM M-1600 24x8 with meterbridge

If you are close enough to CT for an in person pickup I'll sell one of 'em to you at a really nice price.

PM me if you're interested.
