Hey. I'm Sean. I'm new, and I need help.

I'm running XP here
off a p5QL Asus motherboard
emu 1212m cards
and a behringer ada8000
Using ADAT to transfer

Using Adobe Audition 3

The problem I'm having is simply getting playback AND recording from the 1212m.
i was thinking this may be some kind of a driver compatability, because at the moment, if the only audio drivers I have installed are the 1212m drivers, I can't get any playback out of my speakers. (No I don't have big fancy monitoring speakers, just normal computer ones. I'm new to recording/dont want to spend all the money) Is this becuase my speakers are plugged into the audio jack on my motherboard, and not a jack in the 1212m, and therefor only work off the motherboards chipset drivers?

If i go into Sound and Audio Devices I can set the default playback to these:
1. HD Audio Rear Output 2
2 E-DSP Wave [EC00]

and default sound recording to this:
1. E-DSP Wave [EC00]
2. HD Audio Rear Input

If i set the default playback to hd audio rear output, I will be able to hear sound (system sounds, songs through itunes, ect) but if i set it to edsp, i hear nothing.

SO theres that.

Now on to software:

In audition, under audio hardware setup:
I can set the audio driver to:
1. Audition 3.0 Windows Sound
2. E-Mu ASIO

If i set it to audition 3.0, the only inputs seen are:
E-DSP Wave
HD Audio Rear Input

If i set it to E-Mu ASIO, I suddenly have:
Card L, Card R, SPDIFL/R, ADAT 1/2, ADAT 3/4, ect
and now i can record, but. Once i record, I cant hear anything in playback
the only outputs it sees are ASIO 31/32

So, essentially, every time I want to record/hear playback, I have to switch the drivers around.
WHY wont the 1212m drivers give me playback?!

If I set the audio device to EMU ASIO, patchmix dsp will see signals in the ASIO 31/32 output when i playback, but once again, I dont hear anything.
If i have audio set to HD Rear Input so that I can hear it, nothing registers in patchmix

As you can see, this is sooo screwed up.

Can someone offer me some guidance to get me on the right track so that i can just use my adat and get this going in the right direction?

Thanks so much!!!
Sean

PS: If that was really confusing to read, just let me know and I will take screenshots of everything and post them. It might make more sense if you see it visually

Your software (Audition) can only access one hardware audio device at a time. It sounds as though you are expecting it to use both, the E-mu card for input and the motherboard sound card for output. Perhaps you should use the E-mu/ADA8000 for playback.

Of course, this would mean getting some sort of adapters to convert from 2 XLR plugs to 1/8" stereo plug for your speakers. (Or getting real monitors that can use XLR plugs.)

To do that...run another TosLink cable from the E-mu (ADAT out) to the ADA8000 (ADAT in.) This audio will route directly to the rear XLR plugs on the ADA8000 without effecting or interrupting the inputs from the front. Now you can plug in monitors using channels 1 and 2 for stereo playback.

Then set your Adobe Audition output to use ADAT 1/2.
