$100000 budget studio thesis :)

20x20 is actually a good size for a student -- it corresponds to a typical 2 car garage. As such, there are some decent plans on John Sayer's SAE (!) recording manual, as well as some plans that have been discussed here and on his website's forum.

A lot of the construction costs depend on if you are having it built, or if you build it yourself. My one-room tiny studio probably cost about 5K for construction costs (not equipment, just sound and acoustic treatments). If a good contractor does it, it can easily run $200. per square foot - oops! there's 80,000 right off the bat! By scaling back and cutting down, maybe $100 per sq. foot -- its very site specific, so its hard to say. If its a thought excercise, then assume big thick concrete walls so you don't have to soundproof from outside to save $. ;)

I guess for a paper, I'd allocate 1/2 to construction and 1/2 to equipment. For $50,000 you can go a couple of different ways. You can have a darn good used 2" analog tape connected to a mixing console, or you can have a darn good computer based workstation connected to a control surface. I *love* my high end PC (about $3K), running Sonar ($800), with 2 Aardvark Direct pro interfaces ($1K) and Mackie Control surface ($1k). That leaves you about $44K for outboard gear and a good selection of microphones.

Just some thoughts,

This is almost too easy.

I'm given $100K, and a 20x20 room?

Here is what I'd do.

I'd park my F350 in the 20x20 room, then visit BlueBearSound, bringing a fine bottle of scotch, I'd tell him I think he's the coolest guy in the world, get him drunk, and do all my recording there.

Then pocket the $99,811.16 left over minus the bribe, er, scotch.

You arent given the 20x20 room, so I am going to charge you $10K in consulting fees for the following suggestion: Park F350 Outside, and continue on with rest of plan.
Please remit payment to:
John Doe Consulting
123 Main St.
Anytown, State 00000

Thanks

That's a good plan and all, but....
I wonder if you'd get off so cheap at BBS?
Me thinks maybe no.

If this guy is still going to school 8 years later... he's got more to worry about than spending 100,000 for a thesis.

Easiest solution to his problem would have been to buy 999 SM57's and a Behringer Mixer ;)

I luv this thredd on teh interwebz lolz (sent on my iCyborg phone).

Hmmm.... something fishy here -- you've got too many grammatical errors to be in college -- as well, what kind of thesis involves such a sketchy premise????

You sure you're just not trying to get someone to do your high-school homework for you????

i've seen this a few times lately, and trust me man,
he don't gota speak good to be in college.....not nowadays!

I'd figure that if you're writing a "thesis" in "college" or even doing a "hw" assignment for "skewl" you would have basic research methods under your belt or at the very least be willing to utilize proper grammar and spelling to address the highly knowledgable folks whom contribute to this forum.

If you're looking for someone to do your project you'll probably be out of luck, sometimes a little bit of personal ambition with a side of knowledge from those with experience is a more effective means to an end for your assignment.
