hey

i gotta do a thesis for my college.
we've been "give" $100000 thats rite 1 lakh and 20x20ft room.
I have to design a music recording and mixdown facility comprising of one recording room and one control room.
I have to design the layout of studio, show how the studio is treatred acoustically and budgeting involved in purchase of equipment.
The project must have a step-by-step description of how the studio wud be setup.

Ofcourse I have to give the price of each and every material used and all shud fit in the budget!

Im at total loss about the acoustic part of the setup. For the equipment I was thinking of a o2r, some good compressor/gates, Tascam ADATs, Normal Tape recorders, some good effect processors, 2 good synths, 2 DAWs with protools and cubase setup, a good neutrik patchbay, a pair of tannoys, hmm watelse...please suggest!

Also help me with reading material on step=by-step studio setup..

I understand about having sound absorbant material with max absorption co-eff., importance of diffusers. But where to get the price range and stuf.

one more thing
how much budget shud i set aside for contruction and acoustics?

What college is it that you attend?
A thesis? Are you going for your masters degree? In what?
You realize you just mispelled "stuff", among other things, right?
That seems sort of ironic to me.

Hmmm.... something fishy here -- you've got too many grammatical errors to be in college -- as well, what kind of thesis involves such a sketchy premise????

You sure you're just not trying to get someone to do your high-school homework for you????

hi sorry for "Crosspointing"

yea its my skool hw.. :P but presented in thesis form...im at sae..yea the diploma program is relly sad here!

thnx spinster for the info!

Id replace the pres listed with 4 Great river ME2NV. at 8 grand. and add a decent tube pre for 3 grand.

Dump the protools get An Akai DPS24 for under 4 grand spend good money on effects.and mastering tools...you will be suprised how a 200 dollar FMR comp will perform.

the mic list is good but you should look into the Steven Paul designed mic and use alot of 57s. No need to blow 20 grand on a mic alone.

Now the room will eat enough money for you ...be sure and contact john sayers with the dimentions...or auralex will gladly lay out the design for you.

Follow this plan and you will come in under budget, and still have a suporior setup.

Its hard to believe that you're in any kind of "Kolledge", writing the way you do, but I'll play along.

You're only allowed a budget of $100,000??
That's really not very much money! AND a 1 control room - 1 recording room isn't a very diversified set-up. For $100K, you could have a much more workable recording facility.

I'm building a MODEST 1200 sq. ft. facility, from the ground up, and the building ALONE - finished out - with acoustic treatments, is comming in at around $60,000. But its more than 2 rooms.

I'd say: "Build Michael's studio, add in his mic locker, DAW, outboard, then subtract his piano, and spend the rest on a pack of gum."

:p :p :p

yea the room size is 20ftX20ft...thats what the assignment says so i cant change that!

n i dont need fancy mastering equipment...its basic recording/mixing studio

Oh that's good - because if you did, you'd need another $200,000 to equip a mastering place!

Well from looking at MJ's #'s comparativly speaking and you stating that its just going to be basic. I'd say for that amount of $ you'll get a nice studio facility to work in and a tascam portastudio to track on.

20'X20' huh?

Well, those dimensions kind of suck, but if that's what you've got, then you gotta go with it I guess.

The building alone, fitted out with acoustics, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, et al is going to run around $60,000. (400 sq. ft. @ $150/sq.ft.)
Is there a site, or land cost you need to consider too? You have to have some place to put your building.

The other 40 grand is going to vaporize when you start looking at equipment.

You guys are missing the obvious :)

Take the $100,000... buy a $50,000 farm house somewhere way the heck out in the country... now noise isn't an issue.

Spend $1,000 on your portastudio rig (because that's all you'd be able to afford with that budget anyhow)...

Spend ~$10,000 on some good mics, stands and room treatment.

And use the other $39,000 to buy a nice car to drive clients to and from the farm :)

Then, since you can only use 20x20 worth of space... rent out the rest of the farm as a practice hall or hotel for the people recording.

Problem solved.

You didn't say it actually had to SOUND good etc :) Only that it had to be in a certain budget.

Or wat you shud do is build a 20x20 strukture with no roof - it will sound better. Split it in half. Get one mikrofone, one cable, one tape deck. Done. Just spend alot on the tape deck - for instance, but a $75K bid on one on eBay. Presto!
I shud of wroten more

BBS where exactly did you find the money to build your studio? :)

Well... ;) Nah seriously, I'm just interested how the hell people get into the industry
