If you Replaced Meg White with a more Technical drummer the White Stripes would sound, well, like the Raconteurs. And, it is Her unique, although sub-standard drumming that is necessary for that sound. The same argument could be made for the Velvet Underground. As I said before this is only an opinion.
I totally agree. If you replaced Meg with a technical drummer it would not sound like the White Stripes. It's completely a part of the sound that makes them. To tell the truth, if you replaced Meg, then it would just sound like a bad guitarist with a good drummer and the style would be ruined.
That still doesn't make Meg a good drummer. It makes Jack look good because that's the sound he wants!
Your opinion is no less valid than anyone else, but whenever you offer an opinion you
have to be ready to face a counter opinion. That's the way the world works! Not everyone will agree with you and that doesn't mean that person is "closed minded".
To be "open minded" means you give something a chance and
then decide wether
or not you like it. It doesn't mean that if you don't like it that you are "closed minded". That's a weak argument. If someone doesn't agree with you, you don't have to throw out "closed minded" or "machismo" to strengthen your argument. That's grasping at straws.
I listened to the stripes, liked some of the stuff, hated some and made up my own opinion that Meg really doesn't know what she is doing and has limited ability. It would be genius if she was a great drummer who just decided "This is how I'm going to play. I'm gonna back waaay off and sound sloppy", But that's not what she's done. She learned to play a few things and that's good enough for the band. That, by default, means she's not a great drummer. She'd probably be the first one to admit it, and that makes me respect her.
I've said it before. There is a type of crowd out there who will look at a painting of a yellow dot on a red canvas. Someone will come along and say "brilliant!" and pretend to get it. Everyone in the gallery would look confused for a minute and say "Oh yes! I see it now! ~ BRILLIANT!" because they want to look "in the know" and are afraid to look stupid. Then the rest of the world follows them like lemmings over the "brilliant" cliff because that's the hip thing to do and everyone wants to look cool instead of thinking for themselves and saying "It's just a dot!".
That's what the Stripes are to me, but that's just
my opinion.
