Then you need to listen to more stuff... seriously, Joey and Matt are more about speed than taste, and there are far faster drummers out there (Tim Waterson). Listen to Mike Portnoy, Danny Carey, Neil Peart, Billy Cobham, Jimmy Chamberlain (or however u spell his name), and Terry Bozzio.

Matt McDonough has plenty of taste man. He can really feel the music. You should listen to the L.D. 50 album he plays with around 10 time changes per song and rarely plays the same thing over a measure. So agree to disagree. But I agree with you on Joey Jordison he is more about speed than taste.

I was actually talking mostly about Jordison, i really don't know too much of Mudvayne's work. But again, check out Tool and Dream Theater, they both have amazing drummers.

Agreed, but you should seriously take a look at some of Mudvayne's old drum work, not particuarly the new stuff. Its awsome

I feel it's my duty to inject a note of Indie Snob Oneupmanship into this thread. With that in mind my favourite drummers are:

Billy Ficca (Television)
Stanley Demeski (Feelies)
Pete DeFreitas (Echo And The Bunnymen)
Dominic Young (Ikara Colt)
Gary Ainge (Felt)
Klaus Dinger (Neu!)
Damon Krukowski (Galaxie 500)
Mark Keen (The Clientele)

:D
Well, if you're talking about indie one-upmanship, then the greatest drummer of all time is the very wonderful Mo Tucker (Velvet Underground), closely followed by Mimi Parker from Low - on a technical level, neither of them are probably qualified to even clean Neil Peart's sticks, but as far as doing exactly what the song needs with no showing off, no showboating and no theatrical nonsense, they just can't be beat (groan...). IMHO.

Although I feel that Steve Shelley from Sonic Youth is a hugly underrated stickmeister.

And why is it that drummers have to take up so much fuggin' space on stage?

Now as for Ringo. Ringo did not play on only three Beatle songs. Those three are: the single version of "Love Me Do" (the LP version is him), "P.S. I Love You", and "The Ballad of John and Yoko"

The reason for this is that these were the first songs they recorded for George Martin. The Beatles had just fired Pete Best and then sudenly showed up with Ringo. George Martin had no idea who he was and had a session drummer who he was familiar with named Andy White do the drums. Ringo played maracas and tambourine on those songs.

"The Ballad of John and Yoko" had Paul drumming. George and Ringo were not present.

Ringo did all of the other songs. I think he's actually better than people say. I know the other Beatles defended him to the teeth. Ringo himself said that he hated drummers who showed off and did drum solos. He felt his role was to keep time and that's it. The famous solo on "Abbey Road" was only at the insistance of John and Paul. He sneeks some flashy drumming on occasion. "Day in the Life" has some interesting fills, and the end of "Long Tall Sally" has some cool drumming.

Anyway that's my rant.
Paul also played drums on "Dear Prudence" - it's quite easy to spot when it's McCartney playing drums - he's really stiff compared to Ringo - his hi-hat work is a dead giveaway.

You know it is funny I just found this site and I was going to post a general question "who are the best drummers ever"! But this rhetoric has almost moved into that catagory anyway. A lot of the choices people mentioned later on really overlaps beyond traditional rock. But in that world here are my choices.

John Bonham
Phil Rudd
Ian Pace
Butch Trucks
Don Brewer

Progressive/Metal

Terry Bozzio (Zappa days)
Mike Portnoy
Mike Mangini
Marco Minnemann
Virgil Donati

Jazz/Fusion

Buddy Rich (saw him live in 75 when he was 62 and he was amazing)
Dave Weckl
Dennis Chambers
Brian Blade

I can't believe no one has mentioned yours truly.

One vote for jaykeMURD!!!!!!
(he must be great, he has DRUM backwards in his name!)

WHERE THE HELL IS CHAD SMITH!?>!>?@>!?!@?!?@ hed whoop all their asses

I second that about Josh Freese. I was totally surprised not seeing his name sooner.

If anyone sat down and really concentrated on Neil Peart's playing style they'd agree he is a step ahead of these other choices.

This list will knock your socks off

Mike Porntoy
Danny Carey
Sean Kinney
Neil Peart
Jason Bittner
Dennis Chambers

and prob a couple more i cant think of, but those are some of the best drummers in the world right there

no one seems to think that chad smith is that great of a drummer...
he definately is top 10...
he developed that drumming of funk punk psychedelia into something just beautiful-
just add chad and ill be fine

I like Ringo.

I don't care so much about Technical mastery...But, these are my favorite drummers. I feel they are worth mentioning.

1. Ringo Starr: I really don't think 'paperback writer' needed an 8 minute drum solo. So, I like what ringo did in the Beatles...what he did was provide the perfect rhythm for each song. And, he did play on the studio tracks...Paul played drums on "The Ballad of John & Yoko", "Back in the USSR" & possibly "Dear Prudence". "Love me Do" was a session drummer Andy Something...That was the Producer's idea having not heard of Ringo. But, the rest was him. I just don't understand how people can dismiss ringo as an influence. "Strawberry fields". "Abbey Road". "Tomorrow Never Knows".
2. Bobby Bennet: From the Sonics
3. Jon Dinsmore: The Doors
4. Steve Shelley: Sonic Youth
5. Devin Ocampo: from the Mary Timony Band & Medications
6. Mo Tucker: Velvet Underground
7. Kristopher and/or David: From Refused (the shape of punk to come)
8. Patty Shemel: Hole
9. Charles Connor: Little Richard's original Drummer (Keep a' Knockin')
10. Why not: Meg White: I've seen her live, It was a great show. The most simple drumming I have seen. But, it was unique. It was never Boring. Who knows, Maybe she can encourage more women Drummers.

I like john Bonham & Kieth Moon as much as the next person...But, I'm sure that has been taken care of.

Skimming these pages, I'm surprised nobody has said Chuck Biscuits (or if they have, I missed it).
Next to Bill Ward, I think Chuck Biscuits is one of the best, most distinctive drummers who has ever lived. I absolutely love the guy.

You are brave to go there in this thread. I mentioned her earlier as evidence that even the simplest drummer can rock as long as he/she has taste and I got chastised for it. (I came unprepared, from another BBS that is much more mellow and thought that I was being really obnoxious, but it turns out obnoxious is the norm around these parts.)

And BTW, Dear Prudence (great song) sounds like Ringo to me. I'm sure it's just those other three that he didn't play on.

Yeah, I just listened to it to make sure before hitting the submit button and it's definitely him; there's no way Paul can play like that, and it's completely Ringo's style.

I'm definitely with you on Billy, he's always been one of my favs, though, not the most 'technical' drummer, he taught me alot! Very unique style!

Chuck is pretty cool, just never was into his main genre of music that much. I have listened to his playing with Danzig quite a bit.

Yeah, I've noticed that about some of the people on the board. I'm not sure if it's Machismo values...or if they are just close minded assholes. I started using the recording forums...So I'm not used to the "obnoxious" members of the drum forum. (No one will piss on you for proclaiming you favorite producers.) But, there are alot of really helpful people on here as well.

I heard a rumor about Paul having played drums on that. That it was recorded around the time of his departure. I just assumed the last 2 minutes were overdubbed by ringo when he came back(very ringo) and the paul had played drums for the Basic tracks. Since the first 3 minutes of the song are really simple. I thought it was worth mentioning. I have read that from a few sources.

Try these links if you would like to read about the session.
