10 best drummers.

I've been a drummer for over fourty years and not one person has mentioned
Ronnie Castillo.( Sabath), rest his soul or Alex Van Hallen in the rock rhelm. Love all guys mentioned by everyone except one, very over rated which is what Ronnie said when interviewed. And even at 60 plus isn't Ginger still in great form! And don't forget Vinnie Appice! God bless . You all Rock !

Lars from Metallica should take the number 1 spot in the "most overated drummer of all time" list.........

There's no a damn thing that lars can do that 90% of drummers with more than 2 or 3 years of playing experience can't do.

I mean really..... the drum thing in one was cool..... but I could do that when I was 14.....

NEIL
should I say the last name?

But could you pronounce it correctly? It actually is pronounced like "beer", not like "Bert"!!!! I have a taped Rockline interview where the pronunciation is discussed.

Frank Beard of ZZ Top.....crystal clear drumming.

I hope you're not reffering to the "Sharp Dressed Man" days...those were programmed drums, not Frank.

Of course I am referring to his/their entire body of work.

?????

Is this regarding the Frank Beard post?

Is so, then I agree! :)

I really need to get out more. Most of the drummers I know aren't that great. But the ones I know that I really like are Danny Carey, Billy Cobham, Buddy Rich, Terry Bozzio, Chad Wackerman, Dave Weckl, Josh Freese and (even though hes not so great, I like listening to his stuff) John Dolmayan. As for Bonham... I can't listen to him. Because I despise Led Zeppelin. The only song I can listen to is Moby Dick, because its just him, and no one else. But yea, hes a great drummer, but I definately don't think hes the greatest.

As a rock drummer for over 30 years, it is virtually impossible to narrow it down to the 10 best. I have about 50 personal favorite rock drummers who are all kick-ass. No one here has mentioned Chester Thompson, Paul De Long, Jim Gordon, Rick Marotta, Carmine Appice, Steve Upton, Keith Carlock, Phil Collins, Danny Seraphine, Hal Blaine, Nick Mason, Simon Kirke, Alan White, Mike Portnoy, and the list goes on and on and on........

amen to that brother.
I heard Ringo didn't play in the studio with the Beatles, only live. I don't know that as a fact, but many an engineer have said this. Don't mean to get off subject...
I would also add Mike Portnoy and Danny Carey to the list.

This is for the most part not true. It was discussed a little bit earlier in this ancient thread, there were perhaps a couple of songs he didn't play on. Towards the end there were times when Paul would apparently overdub some tracks afterward to get some parts just right or something like that. Those were the exception, not the rule. I remember somebody who was at the sessions talking on a documentary about how unique his fills on A Day in the Life are.

Dom Famularo
Virgil Donati

I think they deserve a place in here...

Buddy Rich
Dave Weckl
Neil Peart
John Blackwell Jr.
Virgil Donati
Steve Gadd
John Bonham
Terry Bozzio
Art Blakey
Abe Laboriel Jr.

Bill Ward

Amen to Bill Bruford. I've been a lifelong Crimson fan (not much of a Yes fan, but I love "Close to the Edge). Bruford has some amazing technique.

Now as for Ringo. Ringo did not play on only three Beatle songs. Those three are: the single version of "Love Me Do" (the LP version is him), "P.S. I Love You", and "The Ballad of John and Yoko"

The reason for this is that these were the first songs they recorded for George Martin. The Beatles had just fired Pete Best and then sudenly showed up with Ringo. George Martin had no idea who he was and had a session drummer who he was familiar with named Andy White do the drums. Ringo played maracas and tambourine on those songs.

"The Ballad of John and Yoko" had Paul drumming. George and Ringo were not present.

Ringo did all of the other songs. I think he's actually better than people say. I know the other Beatles defended him to the teeth. Ringo himself said that he hated drummers who showed off and did drum solos. He felt his role was to keep time and that's it. The famous solo on "Abbey Road" was only at the insistance of John and Paul. He sneeks some flashy drumming on occasion. "Day in the Life" has some interesting fills, and the end of "Long Tall Sally" has some cool drumming.

Anyway that's my rant.
