I'm just curiuse, did fostex ever make a 1 inch 16 track reel to reel deck.
I have a faint memory about using such deck a couple of years ago, but at that time not that much into recording as now.

Greetings Flames! Dude, all the times I was in a studio, I never even saw a 1" machine, You musta been spendin the bucks! I on the other hand was goin to Barnies Bargain basement studios. Hey, dont laugh..that purple dude can mix with the best of em. I do think that Fostex probably did make a 1" machine, but the guys who would know for sure probably don't hang in the Fostex forum. Try another thread maybe.

I'm pretty sure they did make at least one model of 1" 16-track. The inhabitants of the analog-only forum on this site would probably be able to confirm it and tell you all about it if you were to head that way...

Fostex was pretty much committed to the 8-tracks-go-on-1/4" and 16-tracks-go-on-1/2" design and marketing philosophy. They did make a stereo 1/2" machine though, so who knows.

There was, I think, a 1" 24 track from Fostex (the G24, I think?).

There were a few Tascam 1" 16-tracks (e.g. the MS16), but you probably know that.

I don't think so- the G16 was a 1/2" 16-track. The G24 was a 1" 24-track. But I don't think they ever did do a 1" 16-track. Tascam and Otari did, and you could get 16-track headstacks to retrofit onto a lot of other transports...

Fostex's thing back in the early 80's was "more tracks on less tape", pretty much...

I know they did a stereo 1/2 inch deck, the e22 I belive it's called.
Tascam contribution to the 1 inch 16 track format is, the Teac 85-16, MS-16 and finaly the ATR 60-16, what I know.
Though fostex is more like the consumer brand in the reel to reel world, Tascam is more the pro, semi-pro brand. I myself own a Tascam 38, and compared to the Fostex A8 a friend of mine has, the 38 is far superior to the A8, but who's surpriced.
The Fostex product I do would like to own is the e22, it can run in both 15 ips and 30 ips, really nice.

But is there really no 1 inch 16 track Fostex?
