Hey guys,

I need to record some vocals on my computer at home. The only mic I have is a Peavey PVM38 dynamic mic (very similar to the SM58). I wanted to get an inexpensive pre-amp with which to record vocals.

I was thinking about the Behringer V-Amp-2.0's "tube-preamp" patch for a number of reasons.

  1. This thing is dirt cheap and fits in with my "budget-minded" philosophy.
  2. The amp-modeler and effects might come in handy.
  3. I've read on some Behringer disussion groups that the SM58/V-Amp combination seems to work fine.
  4. Did I mention that the V-Amp is cheap?
    [/list=1]

If there is anyone who has tried using the V-Amp with a dynamic mic to record vocals, please share with me your experiences or your opinions.

    Thanks.

Do you already have a V-Amp or access to one? If so, try it. What do you have to lose?

For a lo fi effect it might be pretty cool. If you're trying for good clean vocal sound, I'd imagine it would blow a dead goat.

Mic level signals are much lower and a different impedance than instrument level. You could use a transformer to change it to high impedance. It may work but will likely be very noisy.

I don't own a preamp since I have a Spirit Mixer, but I have heard in the board about some preamps that could be even cheaper than the Behringher and better quality, too.

Some examples could be Art preamps and Delta Audio Buddy:cool:

I would think that the preamps in the spirit would be as good as the outboard preamps you mentioned.

I agree that the pres in the Spirit are probably as good as the Audio Buddy(if not better)and they would have to sound better than the Art Toob MP(almost anything would).

If you do decide on a cheap pre Goa,definately check out the M-Audio Audio Buddy($80) it absolutely kicks the Toob MP ass! And,considering it is two channels,it is much cheaper.

You imagined correct. No matter what I did, the end result sounded like it was recorded on a digital answering machine. :p

It's alright for acoustic guitar though.
