Ok, this is a simple question...

My interface only has 1/4" outputs...I'm going to be making some mic cables: xlr input on some outboard gear, 1/4" output from the interface.

Should the 1/4" be TRS? I have bunch of TS from guitar cables, but that wouldn't be balanced right?

You want use TRS if it's a balanced signal.

What is going into what? You need to ask yourself are the XLR's line level or mic level? Are they pin 3 or pin 2 hot?
Are you sure the 1/4" outs are balanced, line level or mic level. And if line level are the XLR's and 1/4" +4dBu or -10dBm?
