    I perused through all the back and forth on this thread. I agree with the guy who said something to the effect that "if you can't get a good sound out of the 103 you might need to invest in a new set of ears." That doesn't mean that on any given source that a different mic might sound better...

    Don't get hung up thinking that tube preamps are some kind of magical fix to turn pig microphones into C12's. Mics sound different through different preamps, be they solid state or tube. Tube gear is not inherently better. If you've tested a "very modest tube preamp," you've not really tested...
