OK I think I got it now. It's only for monitoring the input signal. If I want the playback to go through the optical output I have to loop it from the main outputs(1/4" plugs at back) to the input at the front. then I get the playback through the optical output. Does that sound right? If so is...

When you say you "I turned my sblive mixer input volume" does that mean you turned up the recording slider with the correct source chosen or just the input level?

I know I'm an idiot but I'm just having trouble wraping my head around the concept. when you look at the track properties of a midi track you have a drop down menu for source, port, channel etc. I understand there are 16 midi channels each of which can be assigned to 4 different output ports...
