    Drum and bass mic selection

    Tomorrow I'm recording bass and drum tracks and have the following mics available: 2 x AKG C414B (overheads) 1 x AKG CK1/C451 (hats) 2 x SM 57 (?) 1 x Beta 57 (snare) 3 x Sennheiser MD421 (toms) 1 x AT-4033 (?) 1 x Beta 52 (kick or bass amp?) 1 x Beyer M88 (kick or bass amp?) * I am limited...

Will a 'proper' soundcard make it all better, and what about a Guillemot Maxi ISIS

I reckon the difference in quality between those two cards certainly is distinguishable. If you want an 8 I/O card that sounds a lot better and you can't afford a Delta 1010, go for a Hoontech C-Port.

Soundcard - how many I/O do you really need?

"what are the things I should consider to determine how many I/O do I really need?" You should consider the number of tracks you want to record simultaneously. If you're recording drums live and want a separate track for each mic then you'd want at least 3 or 4 inputs. For your situation I...

SCSI or a bigger, fast IDE

A 7200rpm 30 GB IDE drive is perfect for you! Not sure about the aoundcard compatibility though.

    Noise Gates

OK here we go. Noise gates set a sound level threshold for opening a mic. channel. The best example of when to use one in a live situation is on back-up vocal channels or on tom mics. I don't think you would ever put one "on every insturment" - that is not really necessary. In a recording...

    Which Processor

G'day! Well you have a helluva lot of options. I'd suggest a PIII 800 with an ASUS CUSL2 board. That would give you a very stable platform. You should be able to pick the combo up for under $700 AUS.

    First Project Preperation

First of all, good luck! I hope it all goes well for you. WRT the compressor, I suggest you use a compressor whilst tracking to control any unecpected boominess from the piano. Also, consider micing in stereo - so that the high notes of the piano are panned left and move progressively right as...

    My First Mix (uh-oh)

H2H, thanks for your comments. The guitar chain was as follows: Guitar (Fender standard start) > some DOD multi FX board > Fender 50w amp > Beta57 > Mackie Board > Hard disk. I know we should be able to get some great sounds out of that but it was our first proper attempt at recording. I'll keep...

    My First Mix (uh-oh)

No one else want to comment? Aw man I'm disappointed :)

    Microphones

I think the D-series are pretty damn average. The OM series, however, are damn fine!

    My First Mix (uh-oh)

Hey Kelly. Thanks a whole lot for your reply - helpful, insightful and accurate as usual :) The kick was mic'd with an SM57 and I had some trouble gettting a good, consistent level out of it. Next time we try a bit of recording I will investiage hiring a Beta52 or D112. Do you think that will...

    My First Mix (uh-oh)

If you have the time please download this tune and give it a listen. I think it's pretty decent considering the equipment used. I'm looking more for comments on the recording.mixing than the actual musicianship :) Thanks, I know you guys can offer some great advice...

    Mackie 1402 vs. CFX 12

Firstly, check out the Soundcraft Spirit FX8 (8 channels with Direct outs). IMO the pre-amps match those of the VLZ and the EQ is a helluva lot better. The built-in Lexicon FX are OK if you mess around with them and learn them.

newbie questions on sound card & ram & hard drive

No worries, matey. What happens is that they will install two hard drives - the first being your 'Master/boot-up drive' (maybe go for a 20GB 5400rpm Seagate), which will have your operating system (ie Windows) installed on it. The second drive (maybe a 20GB 7200rpm Seagate) will act as the...

    Drum O/H Question

OK, thanks, Harvey. I think I'll go with those U87's. I'm sure any of them would sound better than AKG CK1's. :)

newbie questions on sound card & ram & hard drive

Yeah, the RME soundcards are very nice indeed. You shouldn't be disappointed. 128 mb RAM would be OK but get 256 if you can - RAM is dirt cheap right now. The HDD upgrade is a good idea. Many people will tell you it's a good idea to have two drives on your computer - one for system data and...

allen & heath vs soundcraft - the final showdown!!!

Well I compared the MixWiz, the FX8 and the Mackie 1642 and I ended up with the FX8. Definitely the best value out of the 3 and the built-in effects aren't too shabby at all if you tweak em a little bit.

    Drum O/H Question

All right people. I have a chance next week to use some fancy mics from drum overheads for my band's recording. However, the nature of the lending won't allow me to compare mics beforehand so I'm looking for some guidance as to which mic I should choose for overheads. The options are AKG...

pro tools vs hoontech rack unit

Well I have first hand experience with the Hoontech and it sounds great - especailly considering the price. The only complaints I have about it are absolutely crap user guide and the two XLR pre-amps, which are piss weak. I haven't tried it next to a Digi but next to a Delta 1010 there was not a...

    Pearl Jam - Binaural

Believe it or not, "Breakerfall" was actually sung through a fan into the mic (a Soundelux). Pretty cool...
