    Aaaaaaaaaaagh Bloody Computers!

Glad that worked. I think there are a couple of quirks in the win11 wifi code as I've seen this happen with a couple of other machines. It happens in other versions of Windows too, just usually not very often.

Opposite sides of the brain I guess

I typically just do a few short practice runs, noodling with mic placement and playing light up to full volume, make sure the tone and dynamic range sound plausible, then just hit record and go. I usually leave little quirks/mistakes in. If they're the kind only a guitarist is likely to notice...

    The Old Tone Thread

I have a '70 Fender Musicmaster (original speaker and tubes - one has a crack on the center plastic post though so it won't sit right - I think I have a groove tube in that spot) - about as simple as they come, 6V6s (yep, not the higher power version), just one gain stage, but it sounds sweet...

best low priced all around electric to have in studio

in that general price range, samick, schecter, ibanez, and fernandez have models that you might have a good shot at. at the under $300 pricerange, i'd probably be mostly scoping pawn shops and college music shops. ebay and local classifieds might bring you some luck as well.

    has anyone tried to paint

i'd imagine there to be a couple of good webpages on reupholstering tolex on amps-it's quite doable if you take time and care doing it.

    Ot, Please Read, Very Important

i've been advocating everyone drive around in big block V8s with open headers for years now for this very reason. i simply don't trust energy and auto companies to change much of anything without running out of options.

    Found a Fender Standard acoustic

yamaha will definately get you great bang for your buck for a fairly inexpensive acoustic. many people feel that the mid 70's solid topped yamahas are one of the best pawn shop finds around. i personally play an alvarez most of the time. i think it retailed for two something, but had a couple...

very cool. i have an old rage that i haven't been using.. once you get that bad boy together, i'd love to hear what it sounds like. maybe i'll try something similar.

    acoustic guitar chunes

i personally primarily do acoustic and vocals, because it allows me to make music by myself pretty much anywhere. i don't think that there is a better solo played instrument than an acoustic, though it certainly can't do everything. i second the mention of patty griffin's "living with ghosts"...

    Worst Singer EVER

one more for yoko. there are a lot of people in music that i have mixed feelings about, but there's no conflict about yoko.

One at a time or all out

i have tons of songs in various states of incompletion, but more often than not, when i write a song, it's pretty much all at once. once in awhile i end up adding a transition or modifying a couple of parts, but certainly a majority of the ones i write come together at once. generally i only...

Do The Americas Really Have All The Best Wood?

both. the USA happens to have the kind of economy and disposable income to not only make guitars as finely as one wants, but to acquire the best woods from other areas of the globe. as far as growing them, americans have loved good woods (in general) for ages, but great woods (for luthiery)...

Epi Valve Junior/Epi Valve Standard (10' speaker) Loud Enough over Drummer?

i would lean toward 30+ watts through at least a 2x12 cab (or the equivalent) to have reasonable cutting power.

    Cheap tuner?

unfortunately, some of the nice analog tuners seem to be a little sensitive to shock (the boss (tu-12, i think, though perhaps it's an older design?) my dad uses does not seem to register as accurately as it used to, and he attributes it to being bumped around. he doesn't even take it to gigs)...

    an odd amp question

i'm a big fan of using both mikes and line ins while laying down tracks-i've had pretty strong luck so far..

    Tracking heavy distortion...

darnold, when you compress a sound, you bring the quieter bits up and the louder bits down. in a rock/punk/metal/etc recording, this allows for keeping a loud passage consistently at pretty much whatever level you want. you don't necessarily end up with a quieter bit overall (though heavily...

What kind of amp would you suggest?

i have a crate VC20 and i think it sounds great. that said, it is the only crate i've ever used (out of many) that i don't think sounds crummy. a good amp is a good amp. the vc20 may not sound just like a fender or a marshall or vox, but i think it's pretty respectable for what it is (and the...
