Can someone tell me what is the system requirements for Cool Edit 96 to run happily on my computer?

Is the - mic-line in-line out combination in that order, top to bottom, the same for every soundcard.How do you test to find out which is mic, which is line in etc if it is not marked on the soundcard. I have one that I cannot work out which is line in or out?
