Please help me pick a new interface

RME is way out of budget to get what I want. The price difference alone is more than the cost of a new computer, new interface, and new software. I'm not saying it's not worth it in terms of quality overall - I don't know - but the longevity of OS support is not reason enough to justify that...

Please help me pick a new interface

The unit is the second Tascam US-16x08. If you fire it up without the USB connected, it acts as an 8 channel pre-amp, feeding the inputs on the front through the pre-amps direct to the outputs at the back. There's very little difference in price between the Tascam and something like the...

Please help me pick a new interface

I've been reading a bit more and supposedly you can use the unit stand-alone as an 8 channel mic preamp... so if I did get two, I would then have 16 XLR inputs. It's cheaper to buy another than extra preamp units unless I wanted premium preamps. I think this may be decision made.

Please help me pick a new interface

Yes, but I'm recording live, so the vocals etc. are already going through a PA mixer... so presumably could just be connected to the TRS inputs via the "Insert" on the desk as I currently do. The PA has 8 mic pre-amps with inserts.

Please help me pick a new interface

I hadn't realised the Tascam US16x08 had 16 simultaneous tracks! I thought it was XLR *OR* TLS inputs... blimey! Looking at the specs, the newer model looks like it has a more powerful headphone output to me - is this a bit of a no-brainer? It's half the price of some of the others and twice...

Please help me pick a new interface

I was using Sonar 2.0 on Windows XP (not x2 - it's old!)... it wont run on Windows 7 very well (unsurprisingly). I'm now playing with Reaper, although I've not had it long. It seems very responsive even on my fairly old laptop, so I'm inclined to pay the outrageously small license fee! I'm not...

    New Computer Build Not Working

Obviously solved now... but I ran into those exact symptoms - power on, wait a few seconds, it powers back off. Power button was getting stuck and not releasing properly when pressed... after 4 seconds, the system powers off if the power button is held. I always check the silly things first...

Please help me pick a new interface

Well it's finally happened... my much loved STAudio DSP24 C-Port needs Windows XP to run, and I am fed up lugging around a full size PC when I can buy a cheap laptop that's got 20x more power and far lighter. I want a new interface. If I'm going to do it, I want to buy something rock solid that...

New to Reaper - how do I extract a song?

I often need to be told more than once anyway, so that's no bad thing... ;)

are there any quality differences between recording through camera mic input vs comp?

Even with good mics on a high end camera, I personally find the way the sound mix shifts around with camera movements to be annoying on music productions.

New to Reaper - how do I extract a song?

I hadn't appreciated that you can put markers in and tell it to render individual files that way. However, to do the tweaking would affect the whole project unless I start adding automation, so it seems easier to me to extract each song and tweak them separately, that way the only automation I...

New to Reaper - how do I extract a song?

Thanks, that's pretty much what I had been doing (though the slightly longer route - splitting, deleting, moving the tracks to the start of the timeline). I feel a bit silly not noticing the crop feature!

New to Reaper - how do I extract a song?

I've got a live set - one 50 minute track, several songs. I've got the balance about right, EQ about right on the tracks. What I want to do now is take a single song, complete with all the FX chain, levels etc. into a new file, so I can fine tune the individual songs as required... ...can it...

How can I Make my vocals sound better?

No, they want the backing track to be complete. What they think you'll do is EQ it as needed to suit what you're putting over the top of it. ;)

    Wireless guitar- noisy?

Single coil pickups don't belong anywhere near a computer regardless of whether you're wireless or not. Your wireless system will be pretty immune to the interference from your PC etc. - your guitar will not.

are there any quality differences between recording through camera mic input vs comp?

I've done this a couple of times - I will simply say this. On-board camera mics are great for one thing - aligning the video with the audio you recorded separately. Create some sync-points. That means a clapper-board (you can make one with two bits of shelf if you need to). All you need is a...

    Home Recording's Dirty Little Secret

Actually the exact opposite! When I first started messing around with home recording stuff, I wasn't expecting much, but I've been blown away by the quality you can get from even a modest budget. I love the sound on my M-Audio Firewire Audiophile, matched up with a TFPro P3 preamp/compressor and...

Geting from Mixer to Sound Card on the cheap...

Just updating this for the curious... yes, I built it, and have done a few recording sessions with it. It actually worked far better than I expected! Sure, it's no comparison to a professional studio rig, but it's not supposed to be. I can setup and tear down the whole recording setup in about...

Geting from Mixer to Sound Card on the cheap...

Ha-ha! I can imagine that would be very similar, yes! :) Yup, that's my work-around. :)

Geting from Mixer to Sound Card on the cheap...

I've revised my circuit, and the 3.6k is now a 100k log (audio) pot. I'm going to then work out where some key values are (-6dB, -12dB, -20dB etc.) and mark them on a scale. :)
