mic'ing bass - dynamic or condenser

I'm getting into the habit of sending the effects loop in, and micing with a 57 and an I5, sometimes an ATM25 instead, plus a distance microphone for guitar and bass cabs and it's pretty fucking sweet having all of that to mix together/throw away, even though the signal from the effects loop is...

    Volume Automation & Sound Texturing/Layering...

THIS is one of those things where having a board comes in handy...It's awkward and hard to get used to dragging up a fader on a computer screen. Until I started using automation in Sonar recently when I started tracking better sounds, I had no idea WHY they had that fader screen : ) makes it...

    Songs for the deaf

Superb playing and arrangement have more to do with it. Wasn't this album mono too?

Getting each track to sit nicely in the mix

Ah! This reminds me so much of the other guitarist in my band. He has a Peavey Windsor (which is a really nice amp if you want something similar to a 1960s Marshall) which he runs a metal zone into. I don't mind the metal zone at all, it's pretty flexible, but he sets it up so that it booms...

Need help micing drumset w/ two condensers...

Recorderman dude. Either that or just get the two mics equal distance from the snare over the hihat and the ride. Maybe do the same thing but put the LDC in front of the kit and the SDC over the kit. But equal distance from the snare always! Trust me.

Amp modeler vs the real thing

It all depends on your background and your idea of what something is and is supposed to sound like. My idea of the electric guitar is a solid body or semihollow guitar plugged into a tube screamer and into a nice 40 watt Super Reverb cranked to 8, perhaps with lower wattage speakers in the...

    Mind Blowing!

Come ooon, anyone that's ever used Melodyne or Autotune knows that there are rare sources that sound good when you dramatically alter their original pitch and there are sounds that completely fall apart if you move a note even a semitone. It'll be some time before you can completely remove good...

Double kicks with out sound holes

I second or third or whatever place in line I am recommend micing REALLY close to the batter and just triggering a sample. You can do the same thing with the snare to a certain degree too. Metal is more silicon than steel nowadays, most commercial recordings are 90% samples.

Rate amp modellers for home recording

Simulanalog sits really well in mixes. Use it. It'll serve you well. It's not as easy as Amplitube 2, which is my second favorite...But the depth and response of Simulanalog is great. That said, amp sims are akin to creating a photo-realistic environment in a video game. It won't ever...

    Making drum samples

Alright. I'm fucked up on Tylenol PM 'cause I'm sleeeepy and I can't seem to achieve it naturally, the sleep that is, so i hopes this sense makes. I'm recording my band a full-length album this spring and I want it to sound as best as possible so we don't feel like fools paying for...

    Software vs Hardare mixing

I say, equipment doesn't matter. It's the acoustics. Good performance in a room that either sounds good or imparts less characteristic into the audio miced properly using ANY mic but mixed digitally will always sound better than a mediocre performance in an untreated room with proper micing...

Recommend Me A New Tube Amp

I second the B52, or the Peavey Valve King. The Line 6 Spidervalve is ultimately the most versatile though in my experience the 30 watt combo is the only thing worth looking at, and that's only if you want to run it hard and loud enough to get enough power tube breakup to defeat the fact that...

    Snare drum tuning

I've got a problem. My band's drummer's got a pearl forum series kit and the snare has, at times, sounded really good, but it's mostly been random. I understand how to achieve different sounds with toms and kicks, but snares, not so much. We play a mix of ska, punk and progressive rock (we...

    The Mars Volta's new album

There's a son called "Ilyena" where at 4:15, it starts this little drum/percussion break and then leads to the end of the song, you can really hear the drums here. I don't think they used any sampling or triggering on this, so it's probably a real drum sound, but aside from this whole CD...

    Metal Mixing Standarts

If it's not metal going in, you can't make it metal coming out. If it IS metal going in, you should really just focus on whatever is most important. The kick is important, so are the guitars. Find a good balance between those two. Those need to be the most up front. After that, the...

I need some advice on running this shit.

Thanks for the advice guys. I guess I'm going to drop this flat rate stuff, 'cause I do a lot of things that a lot of folks wouldn't. My day rate being 100 bucks meant that I worked 12 hours for 100 bucks yesterday. If there is daylight to burn, it counts as a day for me. I also mix for...

    Drink beer, hail Satan.

The Crypt Creepers Psychobilly band I am working on mixing. This is just a day of thing, I'm gonna motown that shit and make it a little more lively. They were fun!

I need some advice on running this shit.

Alright...Things are picking up and I'm really busy. I haven't had a day off in two weeks. I've got a lot of people asking me to do flat rates for them, add on a few extra hours if they can pay me up front and book a few days...and when I know they'll be easy to work with, I generally do it...

    Metal drums!

I've recorded a psychobilly band and began drum tracks for this band all in one day. I'm busy as fuck and my ears are constantly on fire. Check it out. I've messed with the kick and snare but that's about it. No samples! Good drummer! Didn't tune his snare super fucking high. In My Demise

    New drum track.

http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=10165 I'm pretty happy with the way these came out! I think it's a marked improvement in my drum sound...Still in garage, still using a Firepod, but I had stands to mic the toms instead of clips and to get the overheads over the kit rather than...
