    Best Monitors for under $500

I had some Alesis monitor one's that I hated...I'm using KRK V8's right now and I'm really pleased.

    alesis masterlink 9600

I'm a long time user and supporter of the Masterlink...I've seen them in Nashville several times also...but always with other converters. I have been eyeing the new Tascam unit though...maybe Alesis will come out w/ a Masterlink MkII...

    electric/acoustic guitar- DI or mic?

I've never come close to getting as good of a sound with a pickup as I can get with a properly mic'ed acoustic. There are definitely times that I use the pickup for recording though, sometimes by itself and sometimes in addition to the mic. If you are recording a loud band you just about have...

    Headphone Amp

I have both the Furman HDS-6 and the Behringer unit that was previously talked about. I think that thing was $99 when I got it. I hate Behringer stuff in general, but the headphone amp is pretty good. If you're not going to spend the amount that the Furman costs, definitely go with the...

AUDIO TECHNICA AT4033 vs Shure KSM27/32

I haven't used the 4033 in a while, but I remember liking it. I used the ksm27 on acoustic guitar the other night, and it did very well. It wasn't quite as good as my schoeps cmc6 in that application, but I think it is going to turn out to be a very versatile mic. Very crisp and clear on the...

    Opinions

You really have to compare them to see. You didn't say where you got it, but I know from my experiences at GC, that those guys don't have a clue. On the other hand, you could like the audio-technica better...but don't only listen to what a sales guy tells you.

    mic pres with digi 002

Well, if you had unlimited cash, you could buy a ton of high-end outboard gear. But I'm guessing that you don't...in which case you will probably find it more cost efficient to purchase some decent plugins that can be applied to more than one track and get the job done.

    Best possible overheads for drums

I agree that it could quite possibly be schoeps cmc6/mk4's. They are only about $2500 for the pair though. That being said, I've never stuck a pair of 251's or anything like that up there.

your pick for phones - M40fs, Senn 280, or Sony V600?

I love my hd280's, but I also switch it up with my sony 7506's. You would probably be please with either of those!

    Firepod Question

What kind of mics are you using? Dynamic mics will usually require a lot more gain. That being said, the firepod pres are rated as having 60db of gain which should be plenty. Another thing to remember is that with 24bit recording, its not necessary to have extremely hot levels coming into...

    Guitar amp poll

I voted for a Marshall...JCM 800 from the 80's to be exact. I record with one of those on a regular basis and it is incredible. One trick pony but it does it well. I do have to say though that a new amp has entered my life. A band I'm recording has a Splawn custom amp. Based off the...

I've got an MBOX - new microphones or new preamp?

I've got an 002r and an Mbox. "Focusrite" pres means nothing...its just marketing. The pres on either one really aren't that great. That being said, I'd probably go with an AT4047 right now, and then make your next purchase a good preamp. You'll have the 4047 for a long time, as opposed to...

    MK012 vs. B1?

The mc012's are great for the money. They're not Neumanns or Schoeps, but they don't cost $1k a piece either. If the cymbals were sounding like crap then it was probably the mic placement....and also, crappy cymbals record like crap.

    audiobuddy >>> dmp-3

The DMP3 is about the best you can get for the money. I don't think you will be dissappointed if you spend a little extra money to get it. I've found with preamps, in general, you get what you pay for. The dmp3 is as good as it gets until you want to move up to say $500 or so for a couple of...

AT4047/B Anyone get one of these?

My 4047/sv is one of my favorite mics. I love it most female vocals...but it's great on a lot of other things also.

    What's your price range?

    DFX12 vs DMP3

I don't know that a tube amp in this price range will be a positive improvement. The real tube pre's are going to cost a lot more. I think that the closest thing I would try would be a Presonus MP20, which has a little "idss" knob or something that you can turn and control the amount of...

I need condenser mic for recording vocal!!

In my opinion for condenser mics... AT 3035 $199 AT 4040 $299 Shure Beta 87 - $249 SP C1 - $199 I might be leaving a couple out...but in my experience all of those have been really good.

    DFX12 vs DMP3

I've had that mackie mixer and the dmp3. I think you will definitely notice the difference in the pre's. But for what it is, that little mackie mixer isn't bad.
