How To Mic an Upright Piano

I have a console piano that is a foot away from a wall with heavy drapes in front, I usually place a pair of SDC mics just above right behind the head of the player for a binaural image. If a brighter sound is needed i will move the drapes. Have tried other mic'ing methods but they are always...

    Drum mics: CAD or Samson

I am very happy with the CAD KBM412 bass drum mics and the TSM411 mic, I have not used the condensers.

Recording bass - DI and mic

This is a valid POV but a lot depends on the track you're recording. I am a commit and move on sort of guy myself, but many times the things that get recorded later may clash with that initial tone or part and you may have to go back and rehash the bass part to keep the whole working. For us...

Recording bass - DI and mic

If you have the tracks keep them separate and mix later. As far as mic'ing a bass amp goes it is a lot more complicated than mic'ing a gtr amp. If you go too close it's all woof, too far away and there is too much room. It helps to have in mind the sound you want to capture and how it will...

    First time recording.... (My Drums)

Check your mic cable and placement. My drummer uses either 20' or 22' bass drums with holes in the front heads, I place the mic just outside the drum pointed at the beater for really good impact with a touch of air. Unlike a lot of bass drum mics the KBM412 is fairly flat so a 4-6db bump about...

    I feel dirty ...

Yeah I am guilty as well, those tasty little boxes are so much fun, I should be saving for better mics but alas it is hard to resist those temptations of cheap fun.

Advice on recording a tongue drum

I have been recording a Mexican Folk group where the percussionist uses a tongue drum at times using a LDC about 2 feet directly over the drum. My method on more esoteric instruments is to try to capture what the instrumentalist hears, placing the mics near or directly behind the players head.

    Korg vs Yamaha vs Tascam

I chose the Tascam 2488ii several years ago and am very satisfied, there is a newer version out now the 2488neo which has some added mix functions. 24 tracks would give you 12 stereo pairs and allow you to record 4 stereo pairs at a time. I would ask if you really need to record stereo pairs...

Do i NEED to mic an amp?

No, I have to say some of the more satisfying guitar sounds I've gotten have come from multi effects processors or re-amping. With so many quality solutions you have to really have a serious amp, mic and space to get better results than you can with in the box or virtual emulators. These days...

    Playing Bass Loud with Band

Depending on the volume level and what the other players are using you may need more power and more speakers. For my current 'loud' situation I am using a GK MB500 head with a 2x15 & 2x12 to keep pace with the gtr players twin and boogie set up. It may seem like a lot but anything less is...

    Stage Snake Sends

I have an 8 xlr + 4 trs Rapco snake that I use for band recording using the 4 TRS for 4 headphone sends from a headphone amp, works just fine. In a live situation the 4 TRS are generally used to return monitor and main mixes to the amps and speakers on stage. .

    DP-01FX assignment question

I abandoned the DP01FX as well when i got my 2488/2, but recently used it for a live 2 track recording as well as a slave to add 2 more tracks for live tracking. It's funny how going from 8 to 10 trax simul can free things up for a live session when some trax will be scratched anyway. Had to...

Behringer C-2 or C-4 for occasional rehearsal/gig recordings?

I have a pair of C-2 mics that I like a lot for recording and live, have not used the C-4s. Have used C-2 for drum overheads, mic'ing congas, acoustic guitar, ambient room mics, overheads for an isolated string section and for recording music in some classical settings. Always with satisfying...

    "Unorthodox" Mics

If it works for you, use it. I have a Teac/Tascam Omni mic that was in a Porta 01 bonus pack years ago, plastic high impedance a true crap mic to most people, but it's the best thing I have for a drum ambient mic and it records acoustic guitar like a dream. I use a CAD KBM 412 bass drum mic...

    Tascam 2488 neo monitors

The monitor outputs are not balanced, typical tip sleeve connection. You would need a power amp to push the passive speakers. How many watts depends on your speakers, room and how loud you need to be.

Overdrive pedal in front of FX processor

Dunno why not. I use a G1x as the last stage on my guitar pedal board and always have other pedals in front, Muff, Rat, DS1, SD1.

Rate amp modellers for home recording

I have been using an Adrena Linn III for my current rock project and it sounds very good clean, crunch, lead and high gain. There are the usual Fenders and Marshalls but a lot of other amps that are easy to tailor to your needs.

I have a Rapco 8 XLR x 4 TRS 100 foot snake that I use for live recording and have not noticed any significant signal loss.
