Panning and reverb in early Beatles

They didn't have variable pan pots in those days. ...And Eddie Kramer had a lot more to do with tape flanging than most people know him for.

What to rent for improved tracking?

Put your money in preamps. Ray's totally right, it's all about your skill with simple tools, but if you're gonna throw money towards something, my two cents is to throw it at some of those higher end mic pre's you're seein.

    Chet Atkins

Chet Adkins ruled on so many levels. There's a PBS special on him that I think they're running lately.

    Mbox 2 or What????

Mbox is great. The only thing is that it limits you to two inputs at a time. If you can deal with that, I recommend it highly. I love the software.

    new Mastodon anyone?

Way too noodly for me. I like the LP, but it doesn't come close to the last two for me.

    is this not absurd?

There are two types of people in this world. Those who are true fans of music, and freakish obsessive audiophiles. Seriously, I'm not gonna listen to only Steely Dan for the rest of my life.

    SansAmp Bass DI

Sans Amp bass driver DI here as well and I love mine just as much. Fantastic for the money. I'd really love to save a few hundred though and get one of those Avalon DI's. Their not that expensive really..like five hundred or something. I did a live gig this past weekend and a guy had one and...

    Who was your favorite.....

Jake E. Lee killed! Zakk is surely top notch and the guy deserves everything he's accomplished, but I always liked Jake the best. To me, his style sticks out more than the other two completely. I say this only because too many players ran with Randy's classical angle and kinda ruined it...

Who's got the best free plugs?

I second these. These are great, lightweight plug ins, and for being free, sound pretty damn good.

    Snare Drum Compression?

Dunno if it's been mentioned yet, but I recently recorded a couple of songs for a band with a drummer with a ridiculously hard hitting left hand. He decided to use a kit that was in the studio because it sounded great. The snare on this kit is near perfect in my ears. Well, due to the fact...

Anyone know how to do this?

Yeah, I don't think you can do it directly within Acid. I think you're right. I think the only way would be to do just that and run audio out and back in to an audio track.

Anyone know how to do this?

Yeah, VSTi instruments are controlled via midi. What I'm doing is running a few things together under the Acid umbrella so to speak. I've got my Korg Mono/Poly going and it's synched to Acid via a click track coming out of Acid, and I'm recording the audio from that. Anyway, the real issue...

Anyone know how to do this?

I want to set up a track in Acid 6.0 with a VSTi on it. In real time, I want to record the audio output of that VSTi onto an audio track. Is this possible?

    Who Destroyed Metal?

Nu metal blows and all the bands sound like extremely shitty Helmet ripoffs with lame rappers. Doom metal rules and is dominated by bands that play slow, detune, and have an extremely strong Sabbath influence. Black Metal is good too...big minor keyed classical influence...very fast as well...

Examples of tape compression or tape 'clipping' in well known recordings?

Bingo, I was gonna say this. Zep 1 opens up with complete distortion. It's tape distortion though so it sounds pretty glorious. I've got all of them on old vinyl copies and yes, they sound incredibly good on that format.

    Advice for recording vocals?

Nevermind, the song is 7 minutes long. You'll never have the upload room to get a higher bitrate.

    Advice for recording vocals?

I think is sounds pretty damn good. I think the MG10/2 suggestion is good as well. Whatever bitrate you're encoding the final mix as, use a higher one because the download itself could probably sound better. If I'm hearing correctly, you're getting some heavy artifacts in places from the Auto...
