I think the Meek box is a good value. The comp's pretty cool and the pre and EQ are very usable.
The DMP3's a nice box too though. Tons of clean gain for the price.

If you're using it on loud sources like guitar amp and horns, I think 55 db would be enough. If you're trying to do vocals and distant mic'ing of acoustic instruments, I think you'd need 65-70.

I like the Oktava MC012 if you can find it for cheap. I know that some are Russian and some Chinese these days, and I only have experience with the Russian, but I think they're great on OH.

Anywhere you buy is just as good as anyplace else, I think. I guess Mercenary might be the best place (though I'm not a big fan of Fletcher) because they double the warranty.
