    First hand monitor lesson

Or you can go with... (drum roll)... active monitors. They have the power amps specially matched to them. And in some cases it may be cheaper to go this way. Some active near fields are cheaper than buying passive with a nice power amp. As soon as I get enough money saved, I'm getting the...

    Sonar annoying glitchy glitch

I'll throw this out and see if anyone has any ideas. I couldn't find anything in the manual about it. I highlight multiple midi tracks and switch to piano view so I can see each individual part laid on top of each other in different colors. I select one track and then a note value and start...

How to make the perfect track?

Punch-ins can be clumsy for guitar solos sometimes.. If it is a long and difficult solo, you can try recording 3 guitars on separate tracks and then mixing and matching the different tracks.. And because you did 3 complete takes, the switch from one take to another will most likely be more...

    Should I buy Effects card(s) for VS1680 ?

A DAW is a digital audio workstation. Like a computer set up to record. I think you are making the right decision. I started out with a cassette 4 track about 7 years ago.. got some good mileage out of it. In '98 I picked up the 1680 and really enjoyed it for a couple years. I eventually grew...

    vs-2480

You certainly are gonna lay down some "mad cash" for that thing. I would seriously look into putting together a computer work station before you take the plunge.. Computers are much easier to work with.. especially with a nice program like Sonar.. plus expandability is not an option with the...

    Should I buy Effects card(s) for VS1680 ?

I bought the 1680 back in August 1998.. (you don't want to know what I paid for it). Right now it is a very expensing 16 track mixer that I plug into my computer ;) I got 1 fx card with it when I bought it and it was well worth the money. If you are using it solely for recording (and not a DAW)...

    mixing down in sonar/hs2002

I know where you are coming from. When I first started recording and mixing with my computer my mixes would sound fine to me while I was doing it but when I exported and burned it to CD it was considerably quieter compared to a commercial CD. Next time you do a mix, keep a commercial CD handy...

    Vocals over metal tracks.....

I read an interview with Terry Date once... (Pantera, Prong, Limp Bizquick). He said he used an SM-58 for vocals on most recordings. He then compresses the crap out of the singer's voice to give it presence.

    Patching Sonar

Here's a simple question for you. I haven't patched my Sonar XL yet. When I do patch it, do I need to download all 3? Or do I just get 1.0.3?

Saving .BUN files instead of Projects

Yah.. the file naming system only adds to the problem. I wonder if Cakewalk would consider giving an option on how to save projects in a future update.

New article: Using SoundFonts with Sonar

Good article Ethan... It's about time Pro-Rec updated their stories. I am using soundfonts with Sonar and a SBLive Platinum card. I am very pleased with the results. My band doesn't have a drummer and we usually use drum modules like the D4 or DM-5 when we record albums but I've reached a new...

Saving .BUN files instead of Projects

Personally, I like the Pro-Tools approach to file management. When you open a new session, it creates a folder and saves all audio recorded within a sub-folder. The folders can be moved around/archived/etc. and you can still open the session. I guess I just don't like CW's way of naming audio...

Recording soundfonts to track / Sonar

Hey all, What is the best way to bounce my soundfont midi tracks to audio tracks with the effects applied to them? I know I can export each track as individual .wav files and them bring them back in by importing. Is there an easier way to do this? Say by just recording them to another track...

    Is anyone using Ozone?

After playing with Ozone a little more, I have a few more things I've noticed.. First, I am having a hard time getting my Ozone mixes to sound as loud as T-racks without getting massive clipping. Maybe I need to experiment a little more and set the limiter to "brick wall." But I make heavy...

Splitting Stereo track into 2 mono?

I haven't used PA9 in many months since I moved to Sonar but I'm pretty sure you can do this. You need to create 2 -mono- audio tracks with the inputs set one to L channel and one to R channel. If for some reason that doesn't work, export the stereo track from PA9 as a split stereo signal...

    Is anyone using Ozone?

Nige, Yah, when I'm running a single stereo mix by itself in Sonar and only the Ozone plug-in (all 6 processors active) I top out at about 60% CPU usage I'm doing 16 bit 44.1k right now. I plan on doing 24bit soon so I'll let you know if there are any differences.

    What's with my new monitors???

micro- the most important thing is that you know your speakers. i know a few guys (including me shhh) that mix on decent stereo speakers for the simple fact that we know what good mixes sound like on them. if i know my speakers are harsh, i make my mixes harsh.. etc. going out and spending...

    Is anyone using Ozone?

I'm running a P3-700 384MB Ram 40G IBM-Deskstar 60GXP with Sonar XL. Ozone is definitely a hog. I exported one of my mixes and opened it as a seperate file with Ozone on the stereo mix. When I switched all 6 effects off my CPU was at 2%. Just turning on the EQ/Spectrum analyzer kicked it up to...
