How can you tell your LDC is damaged/dying?

I'm in a pretty heavily gigging bluegrass band. That mic sees at least one outdoor gig pretty much every weekend, sometimes as many as 3.

    Upright Bass Eq in Reaper?

You could duplicate the bass track, eq one for low and one for slaps, and then combine the two. Doghouse bass can drive you mad. It's such a big box and has so many overtones, its tough to know what to emphasize. I'm really new to this, so take my advice with a box of salt, but I'm going...

How can you tell your LDC is damaged/dying?

Oh I see buzzards all the time when I'm in the studio, but they're just waiting for my eventual demise from fatigue and stupidity. How do I check the phantom power for issues? I have a multi-meter, but I'm not very familiar with it. The board is a Soundcraft 200 series that I got from a TV...

How can you tell your LDC is damaged/dying?

I've got some AT LDCs that have seen some miles. I've been recording with them this week, and once in a while their output goes to nothing but noise. If I tap the body or play upright bass, I get distorted thumps. Play the doghouse loud enough, and you'll get a brief second of clarity at the...

Scoring documentary, on deadlime, need help please.

I would love to be able to do more with the room, but the fact is I need to get some music out the door. I'm kind of lucky this project. The stuff I make now is not going to be the focus, the flick is, so I've some wiggle room. Next project I'll get some rigid foam and go to town, but...

Scoring documentary, on deadlime, need help please.

Thanks Thanks for all of the info, folks. So helpful. The MOST helpful thing right now has been to listen to a bunch of different reference tracks through my reference monitors. All of a sudden I discovered reverb! It also became REALLY apparent that I've got way too much bass, which is...

Scoring documentary, on deadlime, need help please.

Stereo field epiphany I just had a realization about stereo field. I read a tweakheadz article yesterday that mentioned using light reverb to give the impression of distance to background instruments. I work in video post production, and I'll often try to mimic human perception with graphics...

OK Here's a dumb question for you...

This pertains to the project I posted about here in this forum yesterday. I'm recording through an analog mixer (Soundcraft 200) into a DAW, using an AT-4033 LDC. During the tracking phase, I left the EQ on the desk alone. I had planned to EQ in the software while mixing. Was this a...

Scoring documentary, on deadlime, need help please.

Thanks Albert Thanks Albert, The low volume suggestion already helped me make a decision I wrestled with for a long time yesterday. When I turned down the monitors it became VERY apparent that certain things (bass slaps) stuck WAY out while others almost disappeared. So, when working in...

Scoring documentary, on deadlime, need help please.

Just as I'd feared Thanks for the reply, BR, I'll try that order tonight. Unfortunately, there is no money in the project's budget for outsourcing the mixing. This is my first time doing anything like this, and it started out a bit simpler than it's become, but the instant I set up that...

Noob question: Order of operations for a quality mix

Hi, I'm new to mixing, and I'd like to know how you pros prioritize the various tasks. Do you mix levels first, then arrange the stereo field? Do you arrange the various sounds in the stereo space to see how it fits before you get too intricate with amplitude? Do you always wait until your...

Scoring documentary, on deadlime, need help please.

Additional info Gear: Soundcraft 200 console Delta 66 interface Cool Edit Pro (left over from my days as a radio guy. I know it's probably outdated, but it's what I've got and I'm broke.) Yamaha studio monitors (I don't know the model, on loan from a friend.) I've got an AT 4033 and an AT...

Scoring documentary, on deadlime, need help please.

Hi, I'm producing some original music for a documentary. I've been gathering pieces for a home studio for a while, and decided this project was the reason to put it together. I have some experience with this from radio and TV work and musical performance. I'm familiar with the basics of...

    1/4" outs/TRS question

Hi, I'm using a Soundcraft series 200 board and a Tascam 34B multitrack. The Tascam has 1/4" inputs. If I'm using the Aux outs on the mixer, should I be using a cable wired like a speaker cable or a cable wired like an instrument cable? Thanks

    AD conversion on the cheap

OK, new question (I posted it on the DAW forum, but I thought I'd ask here as well.) I bought all of this gear from a TV station. Along with it came a Tascam DA30 DAT machine. So, could I use the AD/DA conversion capabilities of the DAT to get the analog signal into the PC?

Can I use a DAT as an AD Convertor?

Hi folks, I've recently aquired some pretty exciting analog gear from a TV station, and I'm trying to put them together into a decent spare-room rig. Amongst the gear I bought is a Tascam DA 30 DAT machine. Does anyone know if I can use the AD/DA conversion capabilities of the DA30 to get my...

    AD conversion on the cheap

I'm actually not as short on cash as I was when I first posted this question. About an hour after the OP my wife called and told me about an unexpected Christmas check that came in the mail yesterday, so I suddenly have more leeway than I thought.:) There's a used Delta 66 on Ebay right now...

Thanks for your help folks. That Layla was on my ebay watchlist about 2 minutes after RRuskin's reply. I've found a used Delta 1010 in my area (the breakout box kind, not the LT) for what seems like a really great price (under $300.) Are they a reliable system?
