Using external mic pre with existing mic pre.

Last dumb question. If I buy adapters to convert the xlr's to 1/4" or buy XLR female to 1/4 chords, that won't effect anything, right? Because obviously the output on the external pre is XLR, so I have to convert it. But if I follow what you saying its really just the jack that matters. The line...

Using external mic pre with existing mic pre.

I'm not in a spot were I can test that at the moment, but essentially your saying use the 1/4" jacks and that should/may bypass the pres?

Using external mic pre with existing mic pre.

I use two Presonus fire pods as my interface between my mics and computer. They are as most of you know "prosumer" level products with mediocre mic pres at best. I am considering renting some high end potable tube mic pres for an upcoming project. My questions are A: will running the external...

    Shoping list

Not bad advice, but it kinda seems like your suggesting that i find an engineer first, i would think 1-piece of property,2-construction budget,3-gear, then employees, cuz you cant really hire people for a studio that does not exist yet. and my boss want numbers on all that, not just gear, but as...

    Shoping list

not the best forum for this maybe, but its the one that gets the most intelligent responces. My boss is a millionaire, straight up he has money. hes 54, loves music and want to do something differnt as a business. probably jsut a big mid life crisis. so i was haveing a converstation with him...

    Big up front guitars

Quite, true, i tend to have a very rigid view of recoring, "if you cant do it live then dont record it" but im trying to open my mind and look at a recorded song as its own little piece of art as apossed to trying to duplicate it live and vice versa. thats a great point of view Rami, its hard...

    Big up front guitars

The "mess" im imagining would be the resualt of some of the suggestions above. If i use some of these "tricks" to make the idividual guitars sound bigger, then i feel it would make a big messy wall of sound (not the good kind of wall of sound). If i took some of the others advice, and double or...

    Big up front guitars

this is true, and when thats the case it does sound best, but with MY band we tend to not have leads, but two distinct rythem parts, Like Fugazi or At the Drive in if your familier with those two, yes there are "leads" at times, but NO solos, so i gues i want BIG guitars with sepertation playing...

    Big up front guitars

As the originator of the this thread id like to say thanks for the info, most of it is worth a try, and all of it is at least good stimulus for trying new things. One question though, if i went one of these routes that suggest doubleling, tripleing etc... and then panning all over creation...

    Big up front guitars

Ive used a 57 most of the time, lately dead center (although ive learned right hear on this web site that my "dead center" is technically a little off center) ive tried using two close mics with mixed resualts, ive tried differnt distances, and off axis etc... for me the best sound ive found has...

    Fixing your own guitar

anyone know a good book or resource that teaches you how to repair guitars, specifically the intonation (sp?), id really like to learn to take care of my own stuff, i know hoe to solder and can fix a short of cousre, but i want to know more about pick ups, pots, etc.. and like i said, mor than...

    Big up front guitars

I play a record music that traditionally has the guitars way up front when recorded. And this is the sound i like, up front but not overbering, still letting the other instruments breathe. When mixing guitar once i have a sound i like i tend to have trouble getting that resault, ie: the guitars...

    Harsh Sounds in mix

thanks, good tips, unfortunately im in chicago on business so i cant try some of this till i get home next week. I understand whats being said about micing, and some of it i will try, but i think its more what glen said about over compression, that might be one of my issues. because like i...

    Cutting Corners

I think dealing with what you have is the foremost, if you have shitty mics, learn get the best out of them, bad preamps, same etc....domt let euiptment bog you down, some great recording have been done with minimal gear and good ears. Also with studio building, really research materials...

    Harsh Sounds in mix

When i track, either while im in the room dialing in sounds, or behind the table listening to the monitors, i dont really hear harsh, grindy frequencies. But when i mix they creep out, it seems to come from the guitars and cymbals, which is the first place you would think they would come from...

Havnt recorded in a while, hows this?

thanks for the critisism Not sure why the link is not working for some, seems to be an issue with lightningmp3.com sometimes. Anyway, its funny, the i think bass is a problem where i mix, so i need to resolve that either with my space, my monitors or both. As far as shte vocals, i think there...

Havnt recorded in a while, hows this?

Life got wierd for a while, but im back into recording in a new space thats very unfinished. Below are two recent recordings, would like some constructive critisism. the second of the two links has no bass guitar in it as of yet so it will be a little empty on the low end...

    The potential ability of amateurs

I mostly agreed with alot of what Glen said skimming through all of this, mostly the part about hiding behind the "home" part of studio, really, with the right space, a home studio is just a studio that happens to be in a home, if anything its a damn lucky thing to be able to have your business...

    Strap-On!

I play way up, like a nerdy jazz guy, except i play a lot of drop D metal. Its just easier that way, the NU-Metal eyes rolled into your skull guitar by your ankles thing is VERY inpractical, you have no control!!!!
