Great River MP-2NV vs. Focusrite Red 8

I would go with the great river. The focusrite red stuff is good, but the great river is a totally different animal, probably in another class altogether. Other brands you are neglecting that you really should check out: Vintech 1272 Langevin Dual Vocal Chandler EMI TG-2 AMI TAB-Funkenwerk V78...

A question you all might be able to help with

You shouldn't be plugging an outboard pre into your mixer's XLR inputs in the first place. These are mic inputs and run the signal through the mixer's own mic pres, which would entirely defeat the purpose of using an outboard pre in the first place. You should always plug outboard pres into the...

A question you all might be able to help with

Trs cables can carry phantom power, but usually the 1/4" trs jacks on a mixer are line inputs and do not have phantom power. Only the XLR jacks on most mixers are wired to the preamps in the mixer and carry the phantom power. So if you are plugging your outboard pre into the 1/4 line input...

    AT 4040 vs 4033

I've been looking for an at4040 on the used market for a while now, and I'm about to give up and just buy one new. They pop up on ebay now and then, but they usually end up going for only $20-$30 less than they cost brand new, and that just doesn't seem worth it to me. They are a fairly new...

    Analog summation in digital studio

Yeah, I thought the DAWSUM CD cleared up the mess for most people, but the debate still seems to be underway here for some reason. For anyone who doesn't know about the DAWSUM CD, there was test done where a number of mixes were summed through bunch of different analogue consoles and a bunch...

what mic is good for recording Vocalist who scream/yell/growl

I'm going to have to back up chessrock, big kenny, and DJL here. You should really look into a nice dynamic mic for screaming vocals. IMHO, A high quality dynamic mic through a good mic pre seems to work better than a condensor nine times out of ten for hardcore or metal screamers. The trick...

    What should I make a pair of for OH (C1, B1, M179, V69ME)?

Here's an idea, why don't you try the LCDs you already own as mono overheads and then pick the one YOU like the best? This would be infinitely more valuable than asking a bunch of random people with completely different tastes for advice on which of YOUR mics would sound the best as drum...

ok so what do we think is the industry standerd

kick: D112 snare: sm57 toms: sennheiser md421 overheads: no standard, way too many options, (but the akg c451's seem popular) However, none of these mics would be my first choice.

    Vintage Neumann Mics

I think you would be much happier with one of these new botique mics than a vintage mic that costs way too much $$$ and then has to be maintained. Soudelux has an outstanding reputation for value and performance. As stated earlier, you should think about using part of your budget for a nice...

    snare too "notey"

Tune the resonant (bottom) head lower in pitch and loosen up the snares a bit. If that doesn't work then try some dampening. Metal shell snare drums tend to have more thwack and less of the "notey" quality that I think you're talking about, but they also tend to ring more than wooden snares...

I need to upgrade my setuip, im using a rode ntk - m audio buddy mic pre - distressor

The audio-buddy you are using is not doing justice to the quite nice mic and compressor that you are using. Get a better pre.

I'm searching for this sort of kick...

Run the drum bus through a cheap analog compressor like a dbx, symetrix, or shure level lock, and then clamp it down hard until you hear it start to distort. This can be accomplished with digital compression also, but IMHO it sounds much better through a cheap outboard unit. You can also try...

    Which Condensor Microphone?

Bottom line: The Studio Projects B1 is a better mic than the Behringer B1, but both of them suck on most voices. You are much better off getting a CAD m177 or an MXL v67g. And remember, it is always a good idea to try before you buy.

    Oktava, Mk012 for drum overheads

Unless it's a huge 10 peice kit, I've never had a problem with one LCD placed above the kit not picking up everything. If you are having trouble balancing the kit with one mic, then try placing it further out in front or behind the kit rather than higher up in the air. I find this works better...

Is a dynamic mic better for ME? Advice needed pls

I've always thought that the audio-buddy was a better mic-pre than the mackie VLZ. I've never compared the two side by side, but I've never been frustrated with a audio-buddy like I have with a mackie. I don't think it's going to fix all of your problems, but maybe you should try switching back...

What exactly is the purpose of a tube in an amp?

Before anyone runs out and buys the latest presonus tubepre because of this thread there is one thing that you have to remember. Good tube equipment is much more expensive to manufacture than good solid state equipment. To a home recordist on a tight budget this means that you will get a lot...

The drum recording you hate the most

You beat me to it! I can't stand to listen to much Yes after Alan White joined. Half of the problem was his studio sound. F#%king terrible studio drum sound for that style of music.

Want to comment on guitar sound?

The drums sound horrible! Seriously! I don't know what's going on with them, but I've heard better drum sounds with just a mackie, one mic, and no eq. The guitars sound terribly scooped, all I hear is high end fizz and a bunch of bass. You should probably just start over again. I don't want to...
