You can get good results with as little as 3 mics (kick, snare, one overhead = mono), you can get ok results without a snare mic. You will not get ok results with a Samson kit. Buy a good kick mic and an SM57. Use the SM57 as overhead until you can buy a condenser, then shift the SM57 to snare...

It actually does sound like a 60's/70's recording man, very cool. I do think the overall sound can do with a little bit more deffenition though.

This is one of an aray of discontinued Amphenol / Switchcraft mic plugs. Used ones go for insane prices on ebay, around $60 if I'm correct. I've converted vintage mics to regular XLR mics in the past, but you'll have to resort to drastic measure (saws, drills etc.).

I've been repairing dynamic mics for years and I've become very good at it. Of course there not much inside them. :rolleyes: But I also have a stack of AKG and Sennheiser SDC's which I made some half hearted attempts at, but put aside again. :( A common problem seems to be that they "kind of"...

I believe you can get a Digitech Vocalist 19" unit for aboit $100 used.

The Boss "Heavy Metal" sounds heavy and growling, like a truck, used by many pro bands (I hate all other Boss distortions). You can also go for the Ibanez Tube Screamer, Celtic Frost used those, but it's a bit more thrashy, like a chainsaw. Though the Tube Screamer has been reinvented many...

The "pop" can hurt your ears. Be careful with your ears, you're gonna need them. ;)

A condenser mic needs phantom power. Ussually a mixer or preamp has a phantom power on/off switch. This phantom power is then supplied through your XLR cable. Your preamp has no phantom power switch, so it will never work.

Even Tom Waits needs some sort of warm up, even Death Metal singers, or they'll want last the tour.
