Zvex SeekWah: born on 1/9/99 and in good shape with a few paint chips on it. Really cool pedal, but I rarely use it for what I do. $175 ships it to your door in the US.
Chameleon Labs 7602 mic pre / eq with power supply: cool 1073 clone, with a very solid, weighty sounding pre and a crazy eq...
I'm not a big fan of the 57, though it works ok for lots of things. But for guitar cabs, I almost always like a combo of either a 609 or Beyer m69 with a condensor mic (lately it's been a Dragonfly, though anything not too fizzy will work fine). I'm surprised more people don't talk about the...
I'm convinced that a good song is gonna sound like a good song no matter how it was recorded (and conversely, a shite song will still sound so, even if done with the best of gear). A good song - good performances - can make less-than-great gear sound great.
Sorry if someone else has already mentioned this, but check out the Glyn Johns 3 mic setup - use sm57's if that's all you've got...who knows, could be cool. FWIW, if I'm dealing with drums recorded is less than optimal circumstances, I worry less about "fidelity" and more about "character", i.e...
Great mics will help things along, for sure...but first, can you be sure that you're not getting any phase problems with your current setup? Eliminating phase problems will go a long way in helping you get the best drum sound you can with your current (or future) gear.
Kind of depends on where you're gonna with your drum sound - personally, I like the OH's to give a nice overall image, and have the other mic's augmenting that (i.e., kick drum mic giving some low end oomph, snare mic giving some upper mid crack).
My 2 cents...
Both are good for the price. I personally use the 609 more, but still like the 57 on guitar cabs (in my case, a Fender Twin and a Hiwatt Custom Tube 20). Neither one sounds great by itself - I usually end up using something on the back of the amp, or another mic in front and...
Not entirely sure what I'd like in return (sorry for being ambiguous). I've got some other stuff I'd be willing to trade, also:
t.c. m300 reverb
RCA BA-43 mic pre
Altec 1592b w/ all input transformer cans
CAD M9 tube mic
Carl Martin rock drive
Voodoo Labs tremelo (4 knob version)
Effector 13 SM...
I've got a mint Chameleon Labs 7602 mic pre / eq and an ugly yet perfectly functional Audio-Technica at4050 that I'm looking to trade for a mic pre. I love both - the 7602 has that beefy, round Neve thing going on, and the eq is insanely good - especially on electric guitars. As a bass DI, I've...
