    USB keyboard

I've used the axiom 49 via usb and pro tools/reason recognize it right away. Pretty much plug and play, not sure about the oxygen, but I would assume it would be the same.

Midi controller advice? Looking for 88 keys weighted but not trying to spend a lot.

That's exactly what I want!! When I'm playing a piano, I want it to feel like a piano. Nothing more, nothing less.

Double kicks with out sound holes

I believe sonar has some sort of "generate midi note" command, although it's been a while since I switched to Pro Tools. Check the help maybe?

    Built-in gate plug: sucks?

What are you trying to do with it? Maybe we can give you some tips or something!

So I tried out the new Antares Avox plug. . .

There you have it! If you want your vocals to sound great, sing 'em better!

    Built-in gate plug: sucks?

Yeah, I'm pretty down with all the digirack stuff. The d-verb is kinda cheap sounding, but the eq and dynamics stuff are top notch!

    Mbox 2 any good?

I would really advise against going with protools unless your eventual goal is to use pro tools professionally (engineer in recording studio or Post production using Protools). It IS the industry standard, but you might not necessarily fall into "the industry". The fact is that protools is...

Midi controller advice? Looking for 88 keys weighted but not trying to spend a lot.

Any advice here? I've been using an old casio keyboard for a bit as a midi controller, but I just can't get used to the plastic feel of these cheap keys. I want to step up to an 88 key fully weighted controller, but price is tight, i'd like to spend $300 at the most, less if possible. Any...

Double kicks with out sound holes

for a sound like this, if I didn't want to use samples, I'd probably stick a 421 near the beater to get a good click and use that sound to key a 50 Hz sine wave. But I'd probably use samples. Everybody's doin' it!

    Firepod pre's

Yeah, until your recording and mixing techniques become very advanced, preamps shouldn't affect the quality of what you end up with.

iLok only holds authorizations, not the actual plugins. You still have to download and install the plugins to your actual computer.

    soft synths "professionals" use

Also, for what it's worth, I recall reading a Butch Walker interview recently in which he talked about using Ampeg SVX for quick/good bass sounds.

    soft synths "professionals" use

A lot of post for commercials is done completely in the box these days. As far as "fancypants compressors"... chances are it could just be the bf76 that comes with protools! As for synth programs... I'm hearing a lot of reason loops in commercials these days. Reason with a couple good...

    808. Look for some 808 samples. Or just generate a signal around 50Hz and just place it appropriately.

    SM7...more uses than just vocals?

Fyi, your firepod preamps probably aren't going to cut it. I had a firebox with an sm7 and I had to crank the pre's and use the 10db of digital gain to get a good level. Very noisy. I've heard that the m-audio dmp3 is a good budget pre that will work well with an sm7, but I have yet to pick...

    Pro Tools LE VS M-Powered

Well, in a nutshell, LE is better for post production because you can get the dv toolkit that lets you do cool things like editing in frames as opposed to bars/beats, samples, time. If you're not into doing post, m-powered gives you a larger base of interfaces to choose from, and because of...

    fade problem

To my knowledge, nothing about fades is destructive and can't be undone with just a few mouse clicks. Here's what you do. Use the trim tool, probably in slip mode, and just trim the song to where you want the fade to end. Now highlight from where you want the fade to start to the end of your...
